Jenna Bush Hager is paying tribute to former Vice President Dick Cheney following his death. Cheney, who served alongside her father, former President George W. Bush, died at age 84 on Monday, November 3, from âcomplications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease,â his family said in a statement, as published by CNN.
Jenna Bush Hager’s Heartfelt Condolences
Speaking on the Today show the following morning, Bush Hager reflected on the loss and shared heartfelt sympathy for Cheneyâs loved ones. âOf course, I think everybody is waking up and thinking about his family,â she said.
âWhen you hear of a politician who passes, thereâs tons of coverage about what they are like as a politician, but as a daughter of a politician, as a granddaughter of a politician, I just am thinking of his daughters and who they are missing, which is not necessarily a man who casts votes, but rather a man who raised them.â
Bush Hager Sends Love to Mary & Liz Cheney
Bush Hager extended her heartfelt sympathy to Cheneyâs daughters, Mary and Liz, during her on-air remarks. âSo I am thinking of Mary and Liz this morning, who Iâm going to reach out to as well just to send my love, and I know my parents are thinking the very same,â she shared.
The Today co-host also spoke about how public figuresâ families face unique challenges when grieving in the spotlight.
âI think public grieving can be very difficult because thereâs a lot about who the person is as a public figure, but very little about who they are as a dad, as a granddad, as a husband, and so Iâm thinking of his family,â she said.
Remembering Cheneyâs Legacy
Bush Hager also mentioned that her husband, Henry Hager, had a personal connection with the Cheney family. âMary was very close, is close, with Henry,â she said. âHenryâs out of town, but I texted him this morning, and Iâm sure heâs going to reach out to her as soon as he wakes up.â
The Cheney family, in their public statement, remembered the former vice president as a man of integrity and devotion to both his country and family.
âDick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing,â they wrote, as reported by ABC news.
âWe are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.â
A Familyâs Private Farewell
The familyâs statement confirmed that Cheney died surrounded by his wife of 61 years, Lynne Cheney, and their daughters, Mary and Liz.
Throughout his decades-long career, Cheney served as vice president under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009 and was regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern American politics.
For Bush Hager, Cheneyâs passing carries personal meaning. As the daughter of a president and the granddaughter of another, she understands the deeply human side of public service. Her words on Today were not only a tribute to Cheneyâs legacy but also a reflection on the family bonds that endure beyond politics.
