Jennifer Lopez Claps Back at ‘Today’ Host Over Ben Affleck Question

Jennifer Lopez didn’t hold back when her divorce from Ben Affleck came up during a live TV interview. During her Oct. 6 appearance on NBC’s “Today” show, Lopez was promoting her upcoming film “Kiss of the Spider Woman” when co-host Craig Melvin brought up her recent divorce mid-question.

“In the middle of filming this elaborate, beautiful musical, your divorce was also finalized with Ben,” Melvin began prompting Lopez to cut him off with a playful but pointed, “There you go! Look at this guy!”

Melvin quickly clarified that he only mentioned the topic because Affleck serves as an executive producer on the movie. Lopez laughed off the moment, then credited her ex-husband for helping bring the project to life. “If it wasn’t for Ben, the movie wouldn’t have gotten made,” she said, adding that she will “always give him that credit.”

Despite the tense exchange, Lopez kept her composure and pivoted the focus back to her work. “Things happen, you have to keep going,” she said, explaining how filming “Kiss of the Spider Woman” became a form of escape. “It’s about how movies and art save us in the hardest times of our lives.”

The pop icon added that completing the project helped her heal after a difficult chapter. “After filming, I took some time off and now we’re back,” she told viewers. “I’m really excited for everybody to see this film. It’s a beautiful film about love.”

J.Lo Opens Up About Her Divorce and Growth

In a recent CBS Sunday Morning interview, Lopez reflected on her split from Affleck, calling it one of the toughest but most transformative times of her life.

“It was the best and the worst of times,” she said of filming “Kiss of the Spider Woman”, which wrapped two months before she filed for divorce in August 2024. “Every moment on set, I was so happy and then back home, it was not great.”

The singer and actress explained that the project became a lifeline during that period. “It was the best thing that ever happened to me,” Lopez said. “It helped me grow in a way that I needed to grow, become more self-aware. I’m a different person now than I was last year.”

Lopez also acknowledged Affleck’s contribution through his company, Artists Equity, which co-financed the film with Matt Damon. “I’ll always give him that credit,” she noted.

Now, Lopez says she’s in a “very good” place both personally and professionally. While “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is already generating Oscar buzz, she told CBS she’s taking it all in stride. “It’s great to be in the conversation,” she said. “But I realized that I don’t need it the way I thought when I was younger.”

Lopez and Affleck’s story spanned over two decades, marked by two major love stories.

They first met in 2002 while filming “Gigli” and got engaged later that year, but called off their wedding in 2003 amid intense media attention. After going their separate ways, Lopez married Marc Anthony in 2004, and Affleck wed Jennifer Garner in 2005. They rekindled their romance in 2021.

The couple tied the knot in Las Vegas in July 2022 and celebrated with a second ceremony in Georgia a month later. After two years of marriage, Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024, finalizing it in January 2025.

Despite the split, both have remained respectful in public. Affleck previously told GQ there was “no scandal” behind their breakup, while Lopez credited the experience for her personal growth.

“It was tough,” she said. “But you get through it  and it helped me become who I am today.”
