Jennifer Lopez’s ‘inappropriate’ hat almost overshadows the tennis at Wimbledon

The last weekend of Wimbledon attracted plenty of famous faces, from Oscar winners to music royalty.

And, in doing so, it meant that it wasn’t just tennis balls being served: there were plenty of fashion moments, too.

From Kate Middleton’s green Emilia Wickstead cape dress to Nicole Kidman’s chic pantsuit (both of which we’ll zoom in on later), there was one look that stole the day during the men’s singles final on Sunday. But possibly not for the right reasons.

Jennifer Lopez was one of the many American celebs who made the trip across the Atlantic for the prestigious tennis tournament, which is renowned for its strict dress code.

Spectators — irrespective of whether you’re an A-lister — are expected to wear smart-casual attire, avoiding things like torn jeans and beachwear.

In Wimbledon’s list of prohibited items, point 5.1.10 bans ‘oversized hats or other garments which could, in the reasonable opinion of the AELTC, restrict or interrupt the view or enjoyment of other Attendees.’

While JLo adhered to some of the rules, nailing the garden party vibe in a beige wrap dress and stiletto sandals, it seems she completely ignored the headwear warning.

Rather than opting for a smaller, more demure piece, she wore a natural-coloured straw hat with an extra-wide brim.

On any other occasion, this face-framing accessory would have been celebrated. It did round off the sophisticated look perfectly, after all.

But unfortunately, due to Wimbledon’s dress codes, she’s completely divided the internet, with some finding it hilarious (imagine blocking the view of none other than Cynthia Erivo). Meanwhile, others are branding her fashion choice ‘rude’.

In the former camp, people have been taking swipes at the hat, claiming it looks as though she ‘made it from an Amazon box.’

‘Solidarity with the guy who spent £3,000 to see Jennifer Lopez’s hat,’ another joked.

Elsewhere, someone else said: ‘Imagine how p***** off you could be at Wimbledon, sitting close to Jennifer Lopez with a fan, and a hat that could cast a shadow over the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.’

Another agreed, adding: ‘This type of hat is inappropriate for such events! You should do your homework lady!’

For those who kept up with the discourse online, you’ll know that JLo did eventually take the hat off to reveal her honey blonde locks styled in a sleek blow dry. Likely much to the relief of those sitting behind her.

But alongside Jennifer’s fashion faux pas, plenty of other celebs got the Wimbledon style memo.

Here are some of the best-dressed celebs over the weekend…

Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton is literally Wimbledon royalty as Patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC).

The Princess of Wales is known for her elegant looks at the tournament where she presents the trophies on finals day, from this year’s blue high-waisted suit to her red peplum drape dress.

On Sunday, she rocked up to the tournament with William and two of her three children, Prince George, 12, and Princess Charlotte, 11.

Kate looked stunning in a bespoke version of an Emilia Wickstead cape dress, in a flattering green.

The future queen styled the piece with a matching brown bag and shoes, droplet earrings, and her brunette locks in glossy waves.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman is another fashion queen who turned heads yesterday for all the right reasons.

The Scarpetta star was a Royal Box guest, and looked the part in a tailored cream Ralph Lauren suit.

The look featured a double-breasted jacket with structured sleeves and a pair of wide-fit trousers.

Underneath the suit, Nicole wore a pink buttoned-up long-sleeved shirt and matching satin tie.

Nicole paired it with a smaller straw hat and a pair of white textured loafers.

Sienna Miller

Sienna joined Nicole in the Royal Box wearing a breezy, prairie-style dress.

The boho-chic Alexander McQueen piece was complete with ruffles, pleats and blue pinstripes, and featured a skater mini skirt.

Sienna added some oversized shades, some white stiletto sandals, and a blue purse.

Her blonde locks were styled in loose waves, and parted in the middle to frame her face.

Raye

Raye always looks like she’s been plucked straight from a Hollywood movie, and her Wimbledon attire was no different.

Yesterday, the musician oozed classic glamour in an all-black ensemble, which consisted of a fitted waistcoat and matching pleated maxi skirt.

The Nightingale Lane singer added a pair of blue high sandals for a pop of colour, and of course, wore her hair in her iconic pin-up bob.

Raye added more vintage vibes with black sunglasses and a red lip.

Daisy Edgar-Jones and Lily Collins

Actors Daisy Edgar-Jones and Lily Collins matched in monochrome looks yesterday.

The Where the Crawdads Sing star wore a black and white v-neck vest and a vertical striped towel skirt.

Daisy accompanied the look with some Chanel ballet flats and vintage sunnies.

Meanwhile, Lily went for more of a Y2K feel in a white bandeau top, white capri pants and black flip flops.

The Emily in Paris star’s now signature Parisian bob was styled straight, in a middle parting, and tucked behind her ears.

Tres, tres chic!
