TV presenter and columnist, Jeremy Clarkson, is known for his controversial opinions, and his latest comment piece wasn’t short of them.
In an article inspired by the woman fined £150 for pouring the last of her coffee down a drain in Richmond, Clarkson, 65, spoke about his views on litterers.
The case of Burcu Yesilyurt prompted a big reaction from the public, many of whom thought the council’s initial reaction was unfair.
While Yesilyurt’s fine was eventually rescinded, Clarkson said in his new column that he hoped that the council enforcement officers were ‘given a slap-up lunch at the best eatery in town’ for their efforts.
Writing in The Sunday Times, he went on: ‘I shall explain. You probably have racists and paedophiles at the top of your hate list. But for me, it’s people who drop litter.
‘I am not a believer in the death penalty but as I have explained many times before, I would make an exception for people who can’t be bothered to find a bin.’
Clarkson continued: ‘Seriously. I would have snipers in trees and on top of bus shelters and there’d be no trials, no arrest, no reading of the rights. Just blam. Bullet in your head and your body dumped into a skip.’
The TV presenter owns a farm called Diddly Squat, where he has filmed five seasons of the hit Amazon Prime show Clarkson’s Farm.
His article referenced the land he owns, as he expressed his frustration at finding helium party balloons which had deflated in his woods.
When this happens Clarkson said he gets filled with a desire to find the people who were responsible and hit the back of their hands with a hammer – even if they were ‘only four’.
The piece continued with a rant about the police, who he suggested have their priorities skewed, and a suggestion that there should be a return of the Special Patrol Group – a controversial unit of the London Metropolitan Police which was disbanded in 1987.
After taking a swipe at ‘all the school-leavers slouching through life, and inventing mental health issues’, he quipped that some officers might consider police brutality is ‘occasionally’ the answer.
Finally, he concluded that while we might have the individuals willing to enforce harsh consequences, he’s not sure that we have the ‘right people in charge to make sure they are given a chance.’
Clarkson announced yesterday on X: ‘Filming at Diddly Squat has stopped for a little while’.
The next series of Clarkson’s Farm, starring his right-hand man Kaleb Cooper and girlfriend Lisa Hogan who runs the shop, is due to drop in 2026.
