Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar spent years insisting their ultra-conservative Christian ministry helped keep their kids healthy and happy. Years after Counting On was canceled, some of the Duggar kids have opened up about how, oftentimes, the opposite was true. Jinger Vuolo has been especially open about how her religious upbringing led to some significant anxiety. The term “religious OCD” has even been tossed around. Jinger and her younger sister, Joy-Anna Forsyth, publicly pinpointed how Jinger was negatively affected. She has moved towards a less restrictive but still religious lifestyle.

Jinger Vuolo has reignited a discussion about religious OCD with a recent admission. On a recent episode of her podcast, The Jinger and Jeremy Podcast, Jinger revealed that seeing friends ditch skirts in favor of pants was difficult for her. She admitted, “I remember when a couple of close friends started wearing pants, and I was so broken-hearted over it.” She was so disturbed by the change that she recalled crying.

Duggar Family Drama: Joy-Anna Forsyth Reveals if She’d Ever Return to Reality TV

The reaction was one that was common among the family members before they moved away from the practice themselves. Jinger was the first Duggar daughter to wear pants in public. Jill Dillard followed. Joy-Anna Forsyth, Jana Wissmann, and Jessa Seewald all wear pants now, although their big reveal was far more subdued than their sisters. The only Duggar daughters who are still exclusively wearing skirts are the ones still living with Jim Bob and Michelle. Michell also avoids wearing pants.

While Jinger has been pretty open about how her faith stifled her growth and independence, Joy-Anna Forsyth also recalled how Jinger’s personality shifted as she became entrenched in the family’s religious beliefs. Jinger’s intense feelings weren’t just about modest dress. During an appearance on <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.instagram.com/reel/DHYfSdEpwDU/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Jinger and Jeremy Podcast, Joy noted that Jinger’s sense of humor took a significant hit when she adhered closely to the IBLP’s belief system. Jinger and Jeremy referred to the stage as Jinger’s “hyper-religious” phase, but the concept of religious OCD has been discussed before.

Joy joked that Jinger often stopped her siblings from joking around, insisting everything was ‘inappropriate.” Jinger agreed that she seldom laughed during that period. The admission may take some Duggar family followers by surprise. Jinger’s facial expressions led many people who watched the Duggar family shows to believe she was the Duggar sibling least enmeshed in the family’s ultra-conservative religious beliefs. Apparently, the opposite was true.

Does Jinger Vuolo have religious OCD?

Religious OCD is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder where individuals experience intrusive thoughts related to morality, sin, or religious practice. Sufferers may obsess over being pure or righteous. The anxiety of being pure can lead to compulsions, including excessive prayer, confession, or seeking reassurance. Religious OCD is as disruptive to daily life as other, more commonly discussed forms of OCD.

Jinger has never revealed whether she’s received an official diagnosis, but did agree she likely would have met diagnostic requirements. Mayim Bialik was the first to suggest that Jinger’s experiences resembled symptoms of religious obsessive-compulsive disorder during her appearance on Bialik’s podcast, <a href=”https://www.bialikbreakdown.com/watch-podcast/jinger-duggar-vuolo” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Breakdown. Jinger appeared on the show in August 2023.
