John Lennon Admitted He Sounds ‘Psychologically Destroyed’ on 1 ‘Lousy’ Beatles Song

The Beatles wrote some of the most enduring songs of their generation, but John Lennon disliked many of them. Though Lennon spoke critically of many of Paul McCartney’s songs, he also had problems with his own. He believed he sounded despondent on the recording of one of his songs.

John Lennon said he didn’t like the way 1 Beatles song sounded

Lennon wrote “Across the Universe” in 1968 and it eventually appeared on The Beatles’ Let It Be. While Lennon said he was proud of the lyrics, he did not like the final recording.

“It was a lousy track of a great song and I was so disappointed by it,” he said in the book <a href=”https://www.davidsheff.com/all-we-are-saying” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview With John Lennon and Yoko Ono by David Sheff. “It never went out as The Beatles; I gave it to the Wildlife Fund of Great Britain, and then when Phil Spector was brought in to produce Let It Be, he dug it out of The Beatles files and overdubbed it.”

Lennon felt disconnected from the band at that stage and believed this came through clearly on the recording.

“The guitars are out of tune and I’m singing out of tune ‘cause I’m psychologically destroyed and nobody’s supporting me or helping me with it and the song was never done properly.”

Still, he believed the writing was strong enough to stand on its own.

He blamed Paul McCartney for the way it sounded

Lennon blamed McCartney for the way some of his least favorite Beatles songs sounded.

“I think subconsciously sometimes we — I say ‘we,’ though I think Paul did it more than the rest of us; Paul would … sort of subconsciously try and destroy a great song,” Lennon said. “He tried to subconsciously destroy my songs, meaning that we’d play experimental games with my great pieces like ‘Strawberry Fields’ — which I always felt was badly recorded.”

Lennon believed McCartney focused too heavily his own songs to spend much time on the rest of the bands’.

“Usually we’d spend hours doing little detailed cleaning-ups of Paul’s songs; when it came to mine, especially if it was a great song like ‘Strawberry Fields’ or ‘Across the Universe,’ somehow this atmosphere of looseness and casualness and experimentation would creep in,” he said. “Subconscious sabotage.”

Lennon believed McCartney would deny this, but felt firm in his conviction that it was true.

John Lennon hated several Beatles songs he wrote

“Across the Universe” was not only Beatles song Lennon thought of as lousy. He was dismissive of a number of his own songs, including classics like “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.”

“I heard ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’ last night. It’s abysmal, you know?” Lennon said. “The track is just terrible. I mean, it is a great track, a great song, but it isn’t a great track because it wasn’t made right. You know what I mean?”

He also disliked “Good Morning, Good Morning,” “Run for Your Life,” “Mean Mr. Mustard,” and “It’s Only Love.”
