Johnny Depp shared some rare insight about raising his kids with ex-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis in France. The actor told The Sunday Times that he was experiencing âempty-nest syndromeâ and waxed nostalgic about when his children Lily-Rose and Jack were young.
âYears get away from us, donât they?â Depp said, and expressed how much he missed his childrenâs younger years. âOh man, my kids growing up in the south of France in their youth?â Depp recalled. âI was Papa. I cannot tell you how much I loved being Papa.âÂ
The âPirates of the Caribbeanâ actor owns an estate in Somerset, England as well as a private island in The Bahamas, but was hard-pressed to call either of those places home. âTruly, the first time I felt I had a home was the place in the south of France where Vanessa and I raised the kiddies,â he shared. âThatâs the only place that ever felt like home.â
Deppâs Relationship with Vanessa Paradis
Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis met in 1998 and stayed together for 14 years, although they never married. According to Paradis, a French model, actor, and singer, welcoming two children together was more of a commitment than marriage could ever be. âCan you be more married than having children togetherâ¦?â she expressed in an interview with Weekend Knack magazine.
During a 2010 interview with Extra, Depp shared his own thoughts on marriage. âMarriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don’t need somebody to say, ‘Okay, you’re married,’” he explained.Â
Depp and Paradis split in 2012 but have remained very close. In 2024 Depp unveiled a painting he created that was inspired by his ex, telling Sky News, “We’ve been very, very close for almost a few decades,” adding, “I know her and I know who she is inside. She’s kind of everything that I could never beâ¦â

Lily-Rose Depp, 26, and her brother, Jack Depp, 23, have kept close throughout the years despite Jack being somewhat private and Lily-Rose rising to stardom in films like âNoseferatu.â
The siblings bonded while growing up in France then attending school in the U.S. âWhen my brother and I were at the same school, whenever we wanted to say something that was going to stay just between us, we could say it in French and nobody would understand,â Lily-Rose shared in Interview.Â
And while they went through a period of not hanging out as much as teens, they definitely seem to have gotten over that. â…weâre best buds now,â Lily-Rose explained.
