Joshua Jackson Breaks Silence on ‘Doctor Odyssey’ Cancellation

“Doctor Odyssey” may have only set sail for one season, but its star Joshua Jackson isn’t ready to dock just yet. After ABC officially canceled the medical drama set on a luxury cruise ship, Jackson shared his disappointment. He reflected on what made the short-lived show so special—even if it left fans and critics deeply divided.

Joshua Jackson Admits He’s ‘Bummed’ About the ‘Beautiful, Over the Top’ Series Being Canceled

Jackson, who played Dr. Max Bankman in “Doctor Odyssey,” opened up to People about his reaction to the show’s abrupt cancellation, admitting, “I’m always bummed out when a show gets canceled.”

“That was a really good group of people, and it was a really fun show,” the “Dawson’s Creek” alum said. “But this is a crazy and difficult business, and whatever the reasons were for them not wanting to move forward with it, they don’t actually tell us those things.”

The series, which premiered last fall and is produced by legendary TV hit maker Ryan Murphy, and featured a crossover with “9-1-1” star Angela Bassett, never made it onto ABC’s 2025 fall schedule.

According to Variety, “Doctor Odyssey” was one of only two shows axed by ABC this year, alongside “The Conners,” which ended after season 7.

“I’m sad that we don’t get to go back and do it again,” Jackson added. “But I really enjoyed the time that we did get to do it.” He hoped viewers appreciated the show’s distinctiveness, saying, “It was a beautiful, over-the-top kind of experience that was like nothing else on television.”

Fans Are Split Over the Cancellation News

Fan reaction has ranged from heartbroken to hilariously skeptical.

“I’m very disappointed,” wrote @josephcollins54 on X. “I was really starting to like this show.”

Another user, @midnightbakerNZ, summed up the fan grief: “Well, (expletive)! Why can’t we have nice things? A show that’s beautiful, nicely written, [featuring a] charismatic cast, and filled with kindness and compassion. ABC, we need good shows like this. What a pity.”

Over on Reddit, however, some users questioned the premise. One commented, “It was doomed from the start.”

Another pointed out the sci-fi-level absurdity of the ship’s medical facilities: “That ship had a medbay straight out of Star Trek… OB-Gyn/delivery room? Check. Chemo suite? Check. Maybe they did an organ transplant too, I forget.” But still added, “LOL, I kept expecting the Dr to wave a tricorder over a patient. I love that stupid show.”

For now, fans can stream all 18 episodes on Hulu, and with Ryan Murphy juggling several other series across ABC, Hulu, and FX, it’s safe to say he’s not slowing down anytime soon.
