Kate Beckinsale Shares Heartwarming Tribute to Her Late Mother: ‘Compass of My Life’

Kate Beckinsale shared heartbreaking news on July 17 after announcing her beloved mother, actress Judy Loe, had passed away. The emotional tribute follows Beckinsale’s earlier revelation this month that she herself had been enduring one of the “most challenging periods” of her life.

On July 9, Beckinsale posted a beautiful and touching Instagram video of herself singing “Bye Bye Love” by The Everly Brothers to her mother. The late actress appeared to be in a hospital bed. She explained that the song held special meaning to Loe, since she had loved it since she was a teenager. She had once performed the song while being part of a harmony group called The Four Teens with her best friends Mary, Sylvia, and Chris.

“When my mum was 14, she was in a harmony group with her best friends Mary, Sylvia, and Chris,” Beckinsale wrote. “Mary is no longer with us, but up until very recently—even in their late 70s—they would get together and absolutely kill it.”

Kate Beckinsale Sings to Her Mother in Final Days

Judy Loe had been battling stage 4 cancer, a diagnosis Beckinsale made public in 2024. Throughout her mother’s fight, she remained hopeful, asking for prayers and often speaking about Loe’s kindness, humility, and unwavering strength.

Tragically, the 78-year-old passed away on July 15 after what Beckinsale described as “immeasurable suffering.” In her tribute, she shared a collection of touching photos of her mother with friends and family, of herself as a child, and of the life they shared throughout their years.

“I don’t want to post this. I’m only posting it because I had to register my mother’s death certificate, and it will soon become public record,” she wrote. “She died the night of July 15 in my arms after immeasurable suffering.”

“I haven’t picked the best photos or the best videos because I can’t bear to go through my camera roll yet. I deeply apologize to any of her friends who are finding out this way or through the press, but I cannot go through her phone. I am paralyzed. Jude was the compass of my life, the love of my life, my dearest friend.”

‘Brave In So Many Ways’

Beckinsale continued, speaking to the type of person her mother was, saying she was kind, forgiving, and full of heart.

“She was brave in so many ways—sometimes forgiving too much, always believing in the ultimate good in people. The world is so dim without her that it’s nearly impossible to bear,” she said. “Mama, I love you so much. This has been my greatest fear since finding my father dead at five, and I am here. Oh, my Mama… I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I am so sorry.”

Support poured in from fans and fellow celebrities left and right, all relaying their condolences to the actress. One user commented, “Our deepest love is with you. Bless your mama’s sweet soul.” Another wrote, “Oh Kate, I am so deeply and profoundly sorry for your loss. Absolutely heartbroken for you. Sending you oceans and oceans of love.”

Beckinsale lost her father, actor Richard Beckinsale, when she was only five years old. He sadly died of a heart attack in his sleep in 1979 at the young age of 31. Like her mother, Richard was a beloved actor, known for roles in “Going Straight,” “Porridge,” and “Rising Damp.” Beckinsale, her mother, and her half-sister Samantha have continued to honor his memory with love and reverence throughout the years.

Rest in Peace, Judy Loe.
