Kate Garraway has been seen for the first time since the death of her husband Derek Draper.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, who has taken a step back from her duties and remained out of the spotlight, announced her husband had died at the age of 56 on January 5.

Former lobbyist Draper had spent Christmas and New Year in hospital after suffering a heart attack, with Garraway and their two children by his side, following years of health woes after first contracting Covid-19 in March 2020.

In the months and years that followed, Draper was thought to have become the worst-affected known surviving person of the virus, with Garraway detailing his health struggles in documentaries Finding Derek and Caring For Derek.

Three weeks after his death, Garraway has been pictured for the first time, ahead of Draper’s funeral next Friday.

Hours earlier, a source said: ‘It’s been an incredibly emotional few weeks for the whole family.

‘Kate and Derek’s two children, Darcey and Billy, have, of course, been hit extremely hard, and Kate has been stoically trying to hold things together for their sake. She has been an absolute rock.’

The insider added to The Sun: ‘As anyone who has lost a family member will testify, funeral arrangements are extremely time consuming and painful. But the day itself will be a joyous celebration of a wonderful man.’

Garraway was married to Draper for almost 20 years, and they share 17-year-old daughter Darcey and 14-year-old son Billy.

Earlier this month, announcing the news that he had died, Garraway said: ‘I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away.

‘As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.’

The presenter shared that Draper was ‘surrounded by his family in his final days’, and she was ‘holding his hand’ when he died.
