Kate Hudson Shares the Powerful Lesson Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell Taught Her

Actress and singer-songwriter Kate Hudson famously comes from a very high-profile family. She was raised by her mother, Goldie Hawn, and her stepfather, Kurt Russell. Additionally, her biological father is musician and actor Bill Hudson.

With that in mind, it’s easy to believe opportunities in Hollywood and the extended entertainment business were handed to her on a plate. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Hudson recently chatted with Josh Horowitz on the February 19 episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. While the star admits her upbringing was obviously a privileged one, she also insists she and her siblings — brother Oliver Hudson and half-brother Wyatt Russell — were taught to earn their individual successes by their parents.

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell Instilled a ‘Work Ethic’ in Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson told Josh Horowitz, “I’m being really honest with you, I grew up in L.A. where I saw kids coast by with parents who gave them everything. And I had the opposite parents.”

Hudson continued, “We were clearly privileged kids. But I do think that my parents were so adamant about how none of it belonged to us, that we didn’t earn it, that in order to get a life [like the one] we were living, we had to earn it ourselves, that that would never be available to us unless we had the same kind of work ethic.”

Having that mindset instilled into her clearly worked, despite being surrounded by children whose parents handed everything to them. Hudson is hugely successful in her own right and obviously took Hawn and Kurt Russell’s lessons to heart.

She said, “I was like, ‘No, I will never rely on my parents.’ And that was my big thing, like, ‘I will never take a job because of them. I don’t want anybody knowing they’re my parents.’”

Hudson insists that’s the case. She elaborated, saying, “When I first started, I was so happy my last name was Hudson [and not Hawn or Russell].”

The one thing she does feel particularly lucky to have experienced is growing up in and around the world she wanted to work in. Hudson said, “This is where I see my privilege and my opportunity. I got to grow up immersed in what I see as the most magical industry on the planet. And I got to see it through a little girl’s eyes, watching everybody work to make it happen.”

Hudson’s Earned Success Is Absolutely Undeniable

While there really is no denying that Kate Hudson was always in a better position than the average wannabe star, there’s also no denying she’s earned her status as a respected and talented performer.

Hudson is a two-time Academy Award-nominated actress. She was up for Best Supporting Actress in 2001 for her performance in 2000’s comedy-drama movie “Almost Famous.” On that occasion, she lost out to Marcia Gay Harden for her role in “Pollock.” However, she now has the opportunity to go one better. She’s nominated for the Best Actress gong for her fantastic performance in 2025’s biographical musical drama film “Song Sung Blue.” She’ll find out her Oscar fate in less than a month. The 2026 ceremony takes place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Per IMDb, Hudson’s other notable movie credits include 2003’s rom-com “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” 2004’s comedy-drama “Raising Helen,” 2006’s rom-com “You, Me and Dupree,” and 2022’s mystery thriller “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”

She’s also appeared in television series like jukebox musical “Glee,” legal drama “Truth Be Told,” and sports comedy “Running Point.”

In 2024, Hudson also released her first studio album “Glorious” (per Discogs).

We’d like to wish Kate Hudson all the very best at the Academy Awards next month. She undoubtedly deserves to be nominated.
