President Donald Trump‘s visits to the U.K. during his first term were interesting and made headlines all around the world for several different reasons.

One of those was when the U.S. president didn’t understand or disregarded protocol and walked in front of Queen Elizabeth II. Another viral video from a NATO reception in 2019 showed the late queen gesturing to her daughter, Princess Anne, after she neglected to shake Trump’s hand. There was also a story that the president wanted a photo op that included Prince Harry, Prince William, and the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton), but wasn’t granted one because he previously called Harry’s wife, Meghan, who was on maternity leave at the time, “nasty.”

Trump is headed to England again in September. But things will be different this time as King Charles is now the head of state, and he won’t have the U.S. president at Buckingham Palace for any events.

Reason King Charles won’t host President Trump at Buckingham Palace

Paul Burrell began working in the royal household when he was 18 years old and became Queen Elizabeth II‘s personal footman. He later started working for then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana. After they separated, Burrell stayed on the staff as the princess’s butler and served in that position until her tragic death in 1997.

He gave the reason why the king won’t be hosting the POTUS at the famed London Palace.

Speaking on behalf of <a href=”https://www.gentingcasino.com/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Genting Casino, the former royal butler told Showbiz Cheat Sheet: “Buckingham Palace is in a 10-year plan to be refurbished. It’s being rewired, re-plumbed, and refurbished as it hasn’t been upgraded since the turn of the century. Work will continue to disrupt Palace life for the next three years. It is costing £369 million ($500 million) by way of an uplift to the sovereign grant to refurbish 775 rooms, and whilst that’s happening, the royal household can’t entertain on a large scale.

“The last phase, which is currently underway, is the queen’s wing, which is the south wing where her late Majesty lived with Prince Philip. The Palace is a mess, and that’s why they’re using Windsor as a backup. Buckingham Palace will be ready again to receive a state visit in 2027.”

He added, “Windsor Castle is the stage setting until 2027 for all state visits, including that of President Trump. Windsor Castle is more informal in lots of ways as the royals consider it to be a family home, and yet it’s 1000 years old.”

According to Burrell, “It will bring back memories for Trump of meeting our late queen there on his last visit which both he and the queen very much enjoyed. She found him very amusing. She loved having President Reagan there in 1982. American presidents traditionally have visited the queen’s private home at Windsor Castle.”

When asked if the U.S. President might feel a bit disappointed that he won’t be staying at Buckingham Palace, Burrell said that he believes Trump will actually be “more impressed” at Windsor Castle.

“I think Trump will feel that he’s been welcomed and accepted into their home. After all, this is the House of Windsor,” Burrell said. “This is Windsor Castle. It’s 1000 years old, older than anything in America. So I think Trump will be more impressed than going to Buckingham Palace, which isn’t that old and not as impressive as Windsor Castle.

“Windsor Castle is the perfect setting and is more convenient. It’s just a short hop from Heathrow when Air Force One lands there. I think Trump will enjoy staying in the familiar surroundings of the Lancaster suite, where he and Melania stayed previously. It has the most magnificent view from its windows straight down the Long Walk. So no, I don’t think he will be bothered at all. I think he will be more impressed with Windsor Castle.”
