Larry Davidâs return to HBO is officially underway â and the first teaser for his new comedy series features an instantly viral exchange with former President Barack Obama.
HBO released the teaser for âLife, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America,â a new seven-episode limited sketch comedy series premiering June 26 on HBO and Max.
While the series itself promises satirical takes on American history ahead of the countryâs 250th anniversary, much of the early attention is already centered on Davidâs deadpan chemistry with Obama in the newly released clip.
Barack Obama Tries to Explain Working With Larry David
The teaser opens with Obama speaking directly to the camera about executive producing the series through Higher Ground, the production company founded by Barack and Former First Lady Michelle Obama.
âI have sat across the table from some of the worldâs most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of the globeâs most intractable problems,â Obama says.
âNothing has ever prepared me for working with Larry David.â
The former president then jokes that while he doesnât have to deal with David âday to day,â working with the longtime âCurb Your Enthusiasmâ creator is still âa lot.â
Moments later, David abruptly walks into frame and immediately creates the exact kind of awkward interaction fans have come to expect from him.
âHey, 44,â David says, before asking Obama if he can list him as his emergency contact.
Larry Davidâs Response Quickly Escalates the Conversation
The conversation spirals almost instantly after Obama points out that emergency calls would then come directly to him.
David tries defending the idea by arguing that doctors or first responders would probably be âmore inclined to helpâ if they saw Obamaâs name attached to his file.
Obama then jokes that David once called 911 over having something in his eye for an hour â a line that feels pulled straight from the world of âCurb.â
The exchange ends with David admitting he may not actually know anyone else willing to serve as his emergency contact before casually suggesting, âOk, Iâll ask Michelle.â
Obamaâs response: âGood luck with that.â
He then turns back toward the camera and sums up the experience in one final line: âYou see what Iâm dealing with here? Impossible.â
HBOâs New Larry David Series Includes Major Comedy Names
âLife, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of Americaâ marks Davidâs first major television project since âCurb Your Enthusiasmâ ended in 2024 after 12 seasons.
According to HBO, the series will feature four sketches per episode built around fictionalized and satirical moments from American history.
David co-created the project with longtime collaborator Jeff Schaffer, who also worked extensively on âCurb Your Enthusiasm.â
The cast includes several major comedy stars, including Bill Hader, Kathryn Hahn, Jon Hamm, Sean Hayes, Susie Essman, Jeff Garlin and J.B. Smoove.
Almost immediately after the teaser debuted online, fans began praising the unexpected pairing between Obama and David, with many calling the clip one of HBOâs funniest comedy previews in years.
For longtime âCurbâ viewers, the teaser also felt reassuringly familiar: uncomfortable social logic, hyper-specific arguments and Larry David somehow making every situation significantly more complicated than it needs to be.
And based on the first teaser alone, that formula still appears to be working perfectly.
