But Father Time catches up to everyone, and now many are asking if, after 23 seasons in the league, LeBron is ready to call it quits.

The Los Angeles Lakers were swept in the team’s 2026 playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, so when it came time for questions in the post-game press conference, LeBron was asked about his future. Now, a body language expert is weighing in and says that LBJ showed a few signs pointing to what he’s thinking now that the Lakers’ season has concluded.

Judi James (no relation to LeBron) is a body language and behavioral communication skills expert who has authored more than two dozen books<span style=”margin: 0px; padding: 0px;”>, including The Body Language Bible and Poker Face.

She analyzed LeBron’s actions and demeanor during his press conference following Game 4 on May 11 and explained that his repeated gestures point to “conflicted thinking” on what everyone wants to know.

Speaking on behalf of <a href=”https://www.casino.org/us/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Casino.org, Judi told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Watching this interview on mute, there are gestures repeating on an emphatic loop that would suggest firstly deep regret and something bordering on sorrow, and secondly conflicted thinking, which would appear to underscore the verbal claims that he’s yet to make a decision.

“There is an overall sense of low morale and feelings of helplessness about the situation. LeBron’s shoulders and upper torso reel backward at the start, and his head drops forward. His vocal tone sounds flat through most of the interview, and there are rituals and gestures that signal a sense of resignation.”

Judi also noticed, “In just over six minutes of the interview, we can see LeBron performing nearly twenty acts of sucking his lips inward. This is often a signal of regret. It can also suggest a desire to avoid speaking and, as the lips are very sensitive, the gesture can also be prompted by a desire to self-soothe.

“There are at least three exaggerated nose-twitch rituals that pucker the nose and mouth into a look of disgust or rejection, and this could be a response to being pushed about retirement. As he speaks, he tends to shake his head gently from side to side, which again looks like a rejection of or distaste for the idea of retirement.”

The expert added, “Lebron also peppers his speech with shrugging rituals, which would appear to endorse the idea that he hasn’t made a decision yet. In the first few minutes, there are fourteen shoulder shrugs that appear to dismiss the idea and he also uses brow shrugs and, at one point, pulls his mouth down in a mouth shrug.

“His responses to the subject of retirement vary. He uses a comedy face and voice in what looks like an act of bravado, but then when he says, ‘I don’t know what the future holds for me,’ his words slow, and he stares forward and slightly down as though genuinely considering his options by picturing them.

“When some of the reality of the idea of retirement is thrown at him, like the thought of his ‘last handshakes and last press conference,’ his gestural responses suggest anxiety bordering on distress. He places a hand on the top of his head, which can suggest distress and/or confusion, and he repeats this gesture twice again when asked if he ‘wants to keep going.’”

Judi concluded, “There are signs of his deep love of what he calls the ‘process’ of the game, and when he describes this in detail, his features soften, his head movements convert to nods of affirmation, his eye contact becomes more solid, and his energy levels seem to rise a little, suggesting this is something he would miss badly if he did retire.

“Maybe the biggest ‘tell’ is a subtle one, though. One of the first times he mentions retiring in the interview he bares his face despite having been hiding it with his hands. The word ‘retiring’ comes with an HRT or high-rising terminal, which is where the tonal inflection turns a word or a statement into a question. At this point, Lebron also appears to glance at his audience to check their response to the idea of him retiring. This subtle moment would suggest he really hasn’t made a decision yet, but the hint is that he might enjoy being nudged or encouraged to stay in the game.”
