Leonardo DiCaprio Remembers Working With ‘Truly Kind’ Diane Keaton at 18: Read His Touching Tribute

Leonardo DiCaprio Pays Heartfelt Tribute to ‘Truly Kind’ Diane Keaton

Leonardo DiCaprio is honoring his former co-star Diane Keaton. The Oscar winner, 50, reflected on working with Keaton in the 1996 drama “Marvin’s Room” after her passing on Oct. 11 at age 79. “Diane Keaton was one of a kind. Brilliant, funny, and unapologetically herself,” DiCaprio wrote on his Instagram Stories alongside a vintage photo of the two from the film’s era.

He added, “A legend, an icon, and a truly kind human being. I had the honor of working with her at 18. She will be deeply missed,” closing his message with a dove emoji.

A Special Bond on the Set of ‘Marvin’s Room’

Keaton played Bessie, the compassionate aunt of DiCaprio’s troubled teen character, Hank, in “Marvin’s Room.” Directed by Jerry Zaks, the star-studded film also featured Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro.

For DiCaprio, it was an early defining role that introduced him to some of Hollywood’s greatest talents. His portrayal of Hank earned praise for its depth and emotion, while Keaton’s performance as Bessie earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Their connection on set clearly stayed with DiCaprio. Decades later, his tribute to her reflected the same warmth and respect that audiences saw in their performances.

When Diane Keaton Mistook Reese Witherspoon’s Son for Leonardo DiCaprio

Even years after their film together, Keaton kept DiCaprio close to heart — though one memory turned into a viral moment. In 2021, Keaton posted a playful Instagram video titled “MALE BEAUTY!!!” in which she praised famous men for their good looks. Commenting on a black-and-white image, she said, “Talk about beauty, Leonardo DiCaprio. Give me a break. I knew him when he was a kid.”

But Reese Witherspoon gently stepped in to correct her, writing, “Diane, the first one is my son! 😍.”

The “Annie Hall” star had accidentally mistaken a photo of Witherspoon’s son, Deacon Phillippe, then 18, for a young DiCaprio. Keaton quickly replied with shocked emojis, while Witherspoon laughed and commented back, “😂.”

Fans adored the wholesome mix-up, which perfectly captured Keaton’s humor and charm.

Following Keaton’s passing, tributes poured in from friends and co-stars across Hollywood. Alongside DiCaprio, her “First Wives Club” co-stars Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler honored her memory.

Midler, 79, shared a black-and-white photo of Keaton dressed in her trademark suit and hat, writing, “She was brilliant, beautiful [and] extraordinary.”

“I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me,” Midler added. “She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”

From “Annie Hall” to “Something’s Gotta Give,” Keaton’s humor, warmth, and individuality made her one of Hollywood’s most beloved icons.

As DiCaprio wrote in his tribute, she was “a legend, an icon, and a truly kind human being” and the world will remember her that way forever.
