All eyes have been on <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/tag/king-charles/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>King Charles and <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/queen-camilla-sent-clear-message-donald-trump-arrived-u-s-state-visit.html/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Queen Camilla as they were welcomed to the White House by <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/tag/donald-trump/?swcfpc=1″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>President Donald Trump and his wife,<a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/most-people-didnt-know-connection-between-melania-trump-king-charles.html/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”> Melania Trump, for their all-important state visit to the U.S.

The POTUS is very fond of the British monarch and considers him a friend. He heaped high praise on King Charles, saying, “His Majesty’s intellect, passion, and devotion have been long, really a long blessing, blessing to the British people, but not only to his own country, but to the cherished bond between the United States and the United Kingdom, and I am very certain that it will continue that way long into the future.”

But it wasn’t just the king. Mr. Trump spoke highly of Charles’ <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/queen-elizabeth-ii-dead-british-monarch-dies-96.html/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, as well, calling her a “very, very special woman.”

On April 28, the king and queen attended a state dinner hosted by the president and the first lady. The two men both gave speeches in which they talked about the connection between their two countries and even took some playful jibes. Following those speeches, they had a quick exchange between them. And now, a lip-reading expert is sharing what they said to each other as well as what Queen Camilla and Melania had a laugh about earlier in the day.

Nicola Hickling is the founder of LipReader, a company specializing in lipreading and expert witness reports. Hickling has spearheaded the development of innovative technologies and services that empower individuals with hearing impairments.

Following the king’s speech, in which he got quite a few laughs from the crowd, the dinner guests had a toast, and Hickling observed the president joking with the monarch, asking, “Where’s your drink?”

The lip reader noted that the king responded, saying, “It’s not moved.” The president then jokingly asked, “Are you drunk?”

King Charles smiled and said, “The state visit, your hospitality has been truly outstanding. You did wonderfully today.”

Hickling told <a href=”https://www.thesun.co.uk/royals/38962292/lipreader-trump-joked-are-you-drunk-king/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Sun, “This moment is notably more relaxed and informal. Charles appears playful, using humor to soften the interaction, while Trump leans into the praise and keeps the tone light … Overall, the exchange reflects a shift from formal diplomacy to a more performative, social dynamic in front of the room.”

Earlier in the day, at the ceremonial welcome, Queen Camilla and Melania were seen whispering to each other and shared a laugh.

According to Hickling, as the ladies took their seats in the rain, the queen appeared to say, “Oh, it’s rather wet.” The lip-reading pro told the <a href=”https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-15773025/melania-trump-queen-camilla-soggy-bottoms-lipreader.html” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Daily Mail that Melania agreed before replying, “It certainly is.”

The two women shared a laugh and Camilla quipped, “We shall have soggy bottoms.”

Melania seemed a bit confused by that and questioned if she had heard right, asking, “Soggy bottom?”

The phrase the queen used was made famous when speaking about how some food turns out on the Great British Bake Off, or as it’s known in the U.S. The Great British Baking Show on Netflix. However, it generally means a damp behind.
