Lorde was forced to pull out of a gig yesterday with just a few hours until she was due on stage at Luxembourg Rockhal due to illness.
The New Zealand pop star, 29 – real name Ellaa Yelich-O’Connor – wrote on Instagram that she hoped resting all day after coming down with ‘ruthless food poisoning’ would mean she could perform, but admitted, ‘I can hardly stand up, and you deserve more’.
‘Luxembourg, I am so sorry to have to tell you that I came down with ruthless food poisoning last night, and I’m still too sick to play for you today,’ she began.
‘I’ve been resting all day, hoping I’d be well enough, but I can hardly stand up, and you deserve more.
‘My sincerest apologies to anyone inconvenienced or upset by this. I can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to it.
‘Our first ever Lux show, first night at Ultrasound EU, our one show with OK Lou, it’s beyond gutting.’
‘Please know that if there was any way I could pull it off, I’d be out there. We are actively working with the promoter on rescheduling, so hold on to your tickets for now.
‘Refunds will be offered if the new date’s no good for you. Thank you for your grace tonight. Love, from a very weak girl.’
After the announcement, Lorde wrote on social media that she would be in Paris this evening, the UK and Dublin, so these shows appear unaffected by her illness as the singer is confident she will make a swift recovery.
As part of her Ultrasound tour, Lorde is due in Manchester on November 15, London’s O2 on November 16 and 17, Glasgow on November 19, Birmingham on November 20, and Dublin on November 22, before she flies over to Amsterdam.
Throughout the tour, which kicked off in Texas in September, Lorde has been supported by artistic including Blood Orange, The Japanese House, Nilüfer Yanya, Empress Of, Chanel Beads, Jim-E Stack and Oklou.
Lorde’s candid new album, Virgin, was released in June to rave reviews, and she gave Glastonbury Festival a surprise performance of her new material, which debuted at number 1 in her native New Zealand and the UK.
In an interview with Jack Saunders on Radio 1, Lorde opened up about how she thought an album might never come again, due to an eating disorder stifling her creativity.
‘At the beginning of 2023 I was not in a great way on a lot of levels,’ the singer said. ‘I’d never felt more disconnected from my creativity.’
She explained: ‘All I was thinking about was trying to weigh as little as possible.
‘Going to sleep thinking about food, waking up thinking about food and exercise – that was my creative pursuit.’
Thankfully, after a period of recovery, her songwriting flair came back and she made Virgin, which explores personal issues including body image, her family relationships, the end of a romantic relationship and gender identity.
Lorde previously credited collaborating with Charli XCX on the remix of girl, so confusing – thought to be about Lorde’s distance in their friendship – for making her music more vulnerable.
The friends sang about how they ‘worked it out on the remix’ with Lorde writing a personal verse about how she would cancel on Charli last minute, because she was ‘so lost in my head / And scared to be in your pictures’.
‘Cause for the last couple years / I’ve been at war with my body / I tried to starve myself thinner / And then I gained all the weight back,’ she sang.
