‘Love Island’ Announces Permanent Changes Ahead of Season 8 to Protect Cast

Love Island host Ariana Madix is back for season 8

Peacock is implementing what insiders describe as permanent changes to help protect contestants on “Love Island USA” from online harassment ahead of the show’s season 8 premiere.

According to The U.S. Sun, network executives have been preparing for months to address the social media backlash that affected Islanders during season 7. The new approach includes measures designed to limit contestants’ exposure to online negativity while the series airs.

The changes arrive as “Love Island USA” returns to Fiji with a new cast of singles and returning host Ariana Madix. The season premieres June 2 on Peacock.

Peacock Announces New ‘Love Island’ Strategy Following Season 7 Backlash

A source told the outlet that Peacock became more involved in preseason planning after concerns about the treatment contestants received online during the previous season.

“Peacock has gotten actively involved in the pre-season this time to avoid playing catch-up as the season is airing like there have been in seasons past,” the insider said.

“It was a strategic move that has been discussed ever since the end of last season when the bullying and online hatred was at an all-time high.”

According to the report, executives understand that reality television naturally generates strong reactions from viewers. However, they are focusing on reducing how much negative commentary reaches cast members.

“They know they cannot control the fans’ reactions online so the only thing they can do is control how that reaction gets to the cast and try to limit that as much as possible,” the source said.

“The U.K. show already uses precautionary measures and the U.S. is going to start implementing it more and more.”

Several season 8 contestants reportedly limited or disabled Instagram comments shortly after their casting announcements became public. The move marks a noticeable shift from previous seasons, when contestants’ social media accounts often became hubs for intense fan debate.

The source indicated that Peacock views the changes as a long-term strategy rather than a temporary solution.

“This is not a one-off decision,” the insider said.

“This is how they will handle this show, at least, moving forward. And if it proves to be successful, other Peacock shows will follow suit.

“This could be the beginning of the new standard way reality TV casts are handled, at least for Peacock.”

‘Love Island USA’ Addressed Online Harassment During Season 7

The new policies follow a turbulent season 7, which became one of the franchise’s most discussed seasons on social media.

As viewership increased, contestants and their families faced criticism and harassment across platforms including Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, and X.

During the season, Peacock and the official “Love Island USA” social media accounts released a public statement urging viewers to show respect toward cast members.

“We appreciate the fans, the passion for the series, and the amazing group of Islanders who are sharing their summer with us,” the statement read.

“We ask for kindness and respect for all Islanders. Bullying, harassment and hate speech will not be tolerated.”

The statement came after multiple contestants and their relatives reported receiving negative messages online throughout the season.

Season 8 Cast Revealed Ahead of Fiji Premiere

Peacock recently unveiled the season 8 cast, introducing a new group of Islanders heading to Fiji.

The lineup includes former volleyball player Aniya Harvey, Paralympic medalist Beatriz Hatz, DJ Bryce Dettloff, model Gabriel Vasconcelos, nursing graduate Kenzie Annis, single father and police officer Sean Reifel, former track athlete Sincere Rhea, bikini shop manager Melanie Moreno, tattoo shop owner Vasana Montgomery, and Zach Georgiou, the younger brother of season 7 contestant Charlie Georgiou.

However, the cast changed shortly after the announcement.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Montgomery will no longer appear on the show after facing scrutiny over resurfaced social media videos that reportedly included a racial slur. Peacock parted ways with Montgomery before the season premiere.

The departure means season 8 will begin with one fewer Islander than originally announced.

Despite the last-minute casting change, “Love Island USA” is set to return June 2, with Madix as host and comedian Iain Stirling once again serving as narrator.
