Former Love Island star Dr Alex George started his dry January a little early and claimed he has saved roughly a grand in the process.

The mental health ambassador, 31, decided to quit alcohol before Christmas and it seems like it has made all the difference to his bank account.

Speaking about his sober lifestyle during Wednesday’s BBC Breakfast, the TV personality shared how much he has saved since ditching the booze.

I’ve done research and alcohol is so expensive, if you want a nice beer in Manchester or London or any other major cities, you’re looking at £6 to £8 he explained to hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay.

‘It’s so expensive and giving up before Christmas was great time,’ he added.

‘I think I’ve saved probably about £1000 in the last month, between cabs, eating food that you have the next morning after a few drinks.’

‘The cost of drink itself is so expensive and I’d rather spend it on other things.’

Alex – who starred in the fourth series of Love Island – was met with support from friends and fans after revealing he has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The doctor explained at the start of December last year how he had decided to quit drinking alcohol due to its negative effects on his ADHD and lack of positive benefits to his physical and mental health.

‘I probably drunk once or twice a week, I would go out on a Saturday and have a few beers with friends but my decision, it’s coming from a position where I don’t feel I have an issue with alcohol,’ he said.

‘It’s not about judging people who drink, but it’s about stepping back and thinking ‘What are the benefits here?’

‘I eventually decided I like going out early in the morning, I enjoy my exercise and feel good about myself and alcohol does all the opposites of those things,’ he added.
