Pamela Warner is opening up about the heartbreaking loss of her son, Malcolm-Jamal Warner. The actor, remembered by millions as Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” died in July at age 54 after an accidental drowning off the coast of Costa Rica.
In an emotional interview with Good Morning Americaâs Robin Roberts, Pamela shared that she has found peace with his passing, saying she believes it was her sonâs âtimeâ to transition.
Clarifying What Happened in Costa Rica
Police said Warner was brought to shore by a volunteer lifeguard and another surfer, and the Forensic Pathology Department ruled his death accidental.
Reports initially suggested Warner drowned while saving his daughter, but Pamela clarified that was not the case. âShe was on shore,â Pamela explained. âShe was not in the water.â Instead, Warner had been swimming with another man who was also caught in the undertow but managed to rescue himself. âHe was a more experienced swimmer, but Malcolm was not,â Pamela said
While speaking with Roberts, Pamela explained that her granddaughter and Tenisha had already been in Costa Rica for three weeks before Warner arrived.
âSheâs homeschooled and this was part of an immersion program,â Pamela said of her granddaughter, adding that âthe husbandsâ joined during the final week for âthe fun part.â
A Motherâs Grief & Final Memories
Pamela recalled the moment she learned her son had died. âI let out a scream from the bottom of my soul,â she told Roberts. âIt was an indescribable pain that resonated through my body.â
Despite her grief, she said she is comforted by their close bond and years of heartfelt conversations. âIâm very grateful that I was chosen to be his mother,â Pamela shared. âMore than anything, Iâm at peace with everything that happened. There was nothing left on the table.â
She also shared that she is committed to honoring her sonâs memory and encouraged others to help carry on his legacy.
âSupport the MJW Living Legacy page,â she said, referencing the Instagram account she created in his honor.
âAnd love where you can, give when you can. Just be better. Just be better,â Pamela added. âBecause thatâs what he wanted, and thatâs what he was working toward. We can all be better selves.â
