Mandy Patinkin Reflects on ‘The Princess Bride’ Memories While Mourning Rob Reiner

Mandy Patinkin is remembering filmmaker Rob Reiner with deep affection, reflecting on their time together on“The Princess Bride” as Hollywood continues to mourn the loss of the beloved director, producer and storyteller.

In an exclusive statement with PEOPLE on Monday, December 15, Patinkin shared his deep sadness for the death of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

“How do we process this unthinkable tragedy? Loss after loss after loss! What is happening to our world? What is happening to our human race?” he told the outlet.

He expressed his anger over the tragedy.

“I can’t breathe, but i’m breathing. I’m howling at the gods every moment,” Patinkin shared. “Then I talk to a friend or myself and quiet down and I realize the gods are not to blame, the tsunami of tragedy is the responsibility of human beings.”


Patinkin Reflects on ‘The Princess Bride’

Patinkin, who portrayed Inigo Montoya in the 1987 fantasy classic, shared heartfelt memories of working with Reiner.

“When we were filming the scene in The Princess Bride, where Inigo kills the six fingered man and says: ‘I want my father back your son of a [explicitive],’ take after take after take Rob kept asking me to do less do less do less,” Patinkin recalled. “In my sleepless night, I realized he wanted less anger from me to allow my broken heart to be felt.”

Cary Elwes who also starred in “The Princess Bride” shared his heartbreaking tribute to social media.

It was a simple black and white photo from set of his chair alongside Reiner’s. He simply captioned it, “No words…”


Hollywood Remembers Reiner & His Legacy

Many individuals have shared kind words about what Reiner meant to them.

Actor Jerry O’Connell, who was in the beloved film “Stand by Me,” said how painful the loss is in an interview with PEOPLE.

“We’re all shocked. I can’t speak for them [costars Wil Wheaton and Corey Feldman], but for myself, I feel like a parent has passed, you know? I just feel like a parent has passed.” 

Reiner built an enduring legacy both behind and in front of the camera.

As a filmmaker, he directed some of the most beloved movies of the past four decades, including “This Is Spinal Tap,” “When Harry Met Sally…,” “Stand by Me” and “Misery,” showcasing a rare ability to move effortlessly between comedy, romance, and drama.

Before becoming a celebrated director, Reiner was also a familiar face on screen, starring as the outspoken Archie Bunker’s son-in-law, Mike “Meathead” Stivic, on “All in the Family.”

His work helped shape modern American film and television, earning him lasting respect across generations.
