Following the sad passing of Robert Redford on September 16, a plethora of high-profile figures have paid tribute to the Hollywood great, with Marisa Tomei adding her name to that list.
The star of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “Jeremiah Johnson,” “The Sting,” and “Indecent Proposal” passed away in his sleep on September 16 at his home in Sundance, Utah, at the age of 89.
Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda, Mark Ruffalo, Kiefer Sutherland, Hillary Clinton, Julianne Moore, and Meryl Streep are among those to have paid their respects to Redford, and Tomei is the latest to speak out about what the big screen icon meant to her.
Tomei Took to Instagram to Honor âLegendâ Redford
In a heartfelt post to her 2.2 million followers on Instagram, accompanied by a memorable clip from “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “My Cousin Vinny” and “The Wrestler” star Tomei spoke highly of Robert Redford, referencing a very specific example of his kindness that resonates with her.
Tomei wrote, “the Sundance Kid, waving one last time. Redfordâs generosity wasnât just in his art, but how he showed up for the world. when Ms. Magazine was starting out, his pr office shared the same building. he volunteered his gorgeous back for their oct â75 cover, knowing the attention would help. always lending his weight to something bigger than himself. a legend in every sense. ð︔
According to The Wrap, the 60-year-old actress was set to star as Gloria Steinem, one of Ms. Magazine’s founding editors, in an HBO miniseries about the publication’s creation back in 2015, but it didn’t end up being made. As per her Instagram page, Tomei was a huge admirer of Steinem’s work as a social activist, so Redford’s generosity in helping her all those years ago clearly means a lot to her.
Tomei and Redford never worked together on a movie, but they did meet â and they were photographed together as far back as 2009, when they were both part of “The People Speak” performances held during the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. While there, they read passages from the book “The People Speak: Voices of a People’s History of the United States.”
