Matthew McConaughey has opened up in the past about a potential future in politics, even considering a potential campaign for the Texas governor’s seat in 2021, per People. However, he’s now revealed what would need to happen in order to make that a reality.
“For now, I’m very secure with â the original thing I knew I always wanted to be was a dad,” the star says while revealing that his children would need to be older before he would consider a political career.
McConaughey has three kids with his wife, Camila â 12-year-old son Livingston, 15-year-old daughter Vida and 17-year-old son Levi.
“So let me do what I can with Camila to get these three kids out of the house as healthy individuals, as much as I can make that possible,” the actor added. “And then opportunities or choices I can make â I’ll be much more free to make choices that won’t have the same consequences they may have now.”
He continued, “Because if I did that now, I wouldn’t be able to be the father and spend the time with the family the way that I have so far and it’s something I’m not ready to sacrifice.”
McConaughey Would Have to Feel Compelled to Enter Politics
McConaughey would need to feel a certain kind of pull if he were to get into politics.
When asked by People if he still thinks about getting into the political world, he explained, “Like I said, it’s something I started looking into probably six years ago and something I’ve continued to study what that arena is, what it would mean, how could I be useful in it, would I be useful in it?”
“[Politics is] not necessarily my language, but that would happen if and when it was something that I couldn’t not do,” he notes. “It would happen when I would look up and see that I’m pulled into it in a way that, ‘Oh, I have to.’”
McConaughey Wants to Be Useful In the Political Arena
If McConaughey were to run for office, he would need to feel needed. That’s why he was educating himself about the political scene.
“Iâm on a learning tour and have been for probably the last six years,” McConaughey told New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy in July 2024, according to Politico.
“Do I have the instincts and intellect that it would be a good fit for me and I would be a good for it,” he said. He then asked, “You know, would I be useful?”
