Television personality Maury Povich has vulnerably discussed a personal difficulty he and his wife Connie Chung had to contend with earlier in their marriage. The former talk show host opened up about the fertility problems that prevented them from having any biological children but was full of praise for the adoption system and shared the love he has for his adopted son.
Maury Povich Discusses Fertility Problems
Povich was incredibly honest when talking about the personal issue while appearing on an episode of Bunny XO’s âDumb Blonde Podcastâ on November 2. In the podcast, the retired broadcaster revealed that he and Chung were unable to fall pregnant naturally.
“We tried to get pregnant,” Maury explained. âThis is over 30 years ago. Connie had to take time off from CBS, and it became a big story that we were trying to get pregnant.”
With both Maury and Connieâwho tied the knot in 1984âbeing public figures, their experience became a hot topic.
Povich and Chung married in 1984 and were both public figures. Povich launched his tabloid talk show âMauryâ in 1991 and Chung was a respected journalist and news anchor who had worked for CBS, CNN, and MSNBC throughout her career. This meant that their personal life and fertility difficulties were often the subject of scrutiny â something they each found difficult.
“Late show guys, you know, Jay Leno and everybody was making fun, ‘I wonder if Maury and Connie are doing it tonight,’” the 86-year-old lamented. “Fox had this great show called In Living Color. They did a skit on Connie and I in bed trying to get pregnant and Jim Carrey played me.”
He continued, “There was all kinds of press and all kinds of stuff, so we finally adopted because we couldn’t do it. It’s tough.”
On the topic of adoption, Povich was gushing in praise of the process, which provides needy children with a home and gives families the chance to have children when they might otherwise not have the opportunity. The pair adopted their son, the now 30-year-old Matthew Povich.
“I’m a big fan of adoption,” he says. “He’s just spectacular. He’s now 30. He’s engaged. He and his girlfriend have been together for like nine or ten years.”
Maury Povich Previously Explained He Was Broke
Povich has often been candid about his personal life. Earlier this year, he detailed how he was financially broke before he found television success.
âI was dead broke at 44. I mean, really dead broke,â Povich told former Canadian hockey player Sean Avery during an episode of his âOn Parâ podcast. âAt 44, I had just come back â how about this. Starting out in Washington, D.C., where I was a kind of a minor celebrity, trying to say, âCan I make it somewhere else?â And I worked in five cities in the next seven years, kind of like an itinerant hockey player, right? Bouncing around all over.â
âA couple of years later, this wild, crazy Australian [Rupert Murdoch] buys the television stations. And in a second, Iâm off to New York to do this crazy tabloid show called A Current Affair. And the rest is history.â
