Meghan Markle’s UK Return Gets a Chilly Reception as King Charles Draws a Firm Line

Meghan Markle’s return to Britain reportedly hasn’t brought the welcome she hoped for. One source said the Duchess “got this underlying feeling that they are not really welcomed by anyone within the King’s circle.” Prince Harry, Markle, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet arrived from California by private jet on August 26.

Soon after, King Charles was spotted driving through a village in Scotland. An Examiner source claimed the King had “hot-footed it off to Scotland” when the Sussexes arrived. The timing didn’t “exactly send a warm welcome.”

The insider said, “She wasn’t expecting a tea party or anything official.” But “it would’ve been nice to have some sort of signal from Charles that he was happy to have his son and grandchildren back in town.” The source claimed the frosty response showed how hard it could be for the couple to get an audience with Charles or “anyone else in his orbit.”

The family’s arrival at Birmingham Airport also came without taxpayer-funded police protection, according to reports. Still, Harry and Markle received support elsewhere. The source said they had “all sorts of nice messages, especially from the Spencers.”

Harry and Markle quit as working royals in 2020 and first moved to Canada before settling in the U.S. Their relations with the wider royal family have remained strained ever since. Harry reportedly thought returning would change it.

“It’s what Meghan expected, but it’s still a huge disappointment because Harry has been promising her it would be so much different,” the insider said. “He seemed to think there would be a real excitement on his father’s part about having them back, but that just doesn’t seem to be the case.”

The source added, “There’s been no warm welcome or really any kind of kindness at all being shown. On top of that, there’s still all this hatred coming her way. It’s a lot to adjust to — it’s no wonder she’s feeling pretty defeated already.”

Another source told Star Magazine that <a href=”https://starmagazine.com/meghan-markle-is-already-wondering-if-she-and-prince-harry-made-a-mistake-moving-back-to-the-u-k/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener nofollow”>Markle has already started second-guessing the move. There is “uncertainty over how things are going to go with the royals and the British public.” The source said Markle is “understandably pretty anxious” and “already wondering if this was a mistake.”

The Sussexes haven’t returned as working royals and reportedly won’t live on royal property. Instead, Harry and Markle plan to settle in the Cotswolds. According to Page Six, Archie and Lilibet had already been enrolled at a school in the area.

Meanwhile, the King ordered the release of a letter addressing confusion about Harry and Markle’s royal status. According to People, it was guidance sent to senior government officials, military figures, and Lord Lieutenants. Charles reportedly issued it after receiving a “number of requests” about Harry and Markle’s roles and titles.

“To help avoid doubt or confusion, the King has directed that the following information be shared. Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used,” the letter read.

“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests,” it added.
