Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross Split After 9 Years, Committed to Co-Parenting Their Son

Mel Gibson

Veteran actor and director Mel Gibson and screenwriter Rosalind Ross have officially ended their nearly nine-year relationship, the couple confirmed in a joint statement to PEOPLE.

While the breakup marks the close of a long chapter in their personal lives, both emphasized their shared focus on co-parenting their 8-year-old son, Lars, with love and mutual respect.

The Two Released a Joint Statement

“Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible,” the two said in a joint statement.

Gibson, 69, and Ross, 35, first began dating in 2014 after being introduced through mutual friends, and their connection quickly evolved into a long-term partnership.

In 2017, the pair welcomed their son Lars, a milestone that came at a memorable moment: Gibson was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for “Hacksaw Ridge” just days after Lars was born.

Their relationship had largely remained out of the tabloids, with both choosing to keep family life private even as they made occasional public appearances together.

In their statement, the couple said ending the romantic portion of their relationship was “sad” but reaffirmed that they are “blessed with a beautiful son” and committed to being the “best parents possible” for him.

The thoughtful, united message underscores a respectful transition and a dedication to co-parenting — a priority likely rooted in the years they spent raising Lars and building a life together.

Gibson Has Numerous Children

The “Braveheart” star has long balanced a prolific career in Hollywood with an active family life.

In addition to Lars, he is a father to eight other children from previous relationships — seven with ex-wife Robyn Moore and another daughter with former partner Oksana Grigorieva.

Gibson’s dedication to fatherhood has been visible across decades, even as his public persona has weathered professional ups and personal scrutiny.

Ross, a screenwriter, director and former equestrian vaulter, is perhaps best known professionally for her work on projects like the 2022 feature “Father Stu.”

She and Gibson have collaborated closely over the years, both personally and creatively, and their shared interests in storytelling helped shape their partnership.

Though the split was said to have occurred quietly about a year ago, the couple’s recent statement confirms that their relationship’s end was never rooted in drama or public dispute.

Instead, they’ve chosen a calm, supportive approach to moving forward — both as individuals and as parents.
