‘Menace II Society’ Actor on Life Support Amid Heartbreaking Battle With Meningitis

A life support machine.

One of the stars of the classic 1993 teen crime drama movie “Menace II Society” is on life support amid a heartbreaking battle with the infectious neurological disease meningitis.

Samuel Monroe Jr., 52, played the cousin of Erin LeShawn Wiley’s Ilena in the movie in a small but memorable role. Ilena is the girl who Tyrin Turner’s main character, Kaydee “Caine” Lawson, gets pregnant in the film.

Per Complex, Monroe Jr.’s mother, Joyce Patton, posted on Facebook that he is in a critical condition.

Patton posted a picture of her son in a hospital bed and wrote, “Please pray for Samuel Monroe Jr. my son who is now on life support. God don’t make no mistakes but he is gracious and I am humbly asking for his mercy and grace for Sam. I love you son… to the moon and back.”

Monroe Jr.’s wife, Shawna Stewart, spoke directly to Complex and to confirmed the news.

Stewart told the publication, “Around 18 months ago, Samuel was in Las Vegas filming, and unfortunately, that is where he contracted meningitis. He went to several different hospitals, where his condition was repeatedly misdiagnosed and because of this negligence, the meningitis went untreated for eight months.”

She added that once the condition was “finally identified,” it had “already spread not only to his spine but also to his brain.”
