Just hours after his Emmy nod, actor Cooper Koch picked up a call from prison â it was Lyle Menendez on the line, calling to congratulate him.
Koch, who portrayed Erik Menendez in “Netflixâs Monsters: The Lyle & Erik Menendez Story”, revealed on The Awardist podcast that Lyle reached out from prison to send his congratulations. âI spoke with Lyle today. He called to send his congrats and was very, very sweet,â said Koch. âAnd he was jealous that I was at Wimbledon this weekend.â
Emmy Buzz Grows for Netflixâs ‘Monsters’ Series
The anthology series, co-created by Ryan Murphy, debuted on Netflix in September and has garnered 11 Emmy nominations. Alongside Koch, Monsters earned nods for Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny, who portrayed Jose & Kitty Menendez.
Koch described the project as âsort of like the end of an eraâ for the infamous case during the same podcast.
âWhat a great way to kind of put it to bed,â he said, âand hopefully that will also go with the brothers getting released by the end of the summer.â
Cooper Koch Celebrates Emmy Nomination, But Wishes Co-Stars Were Included
Cooper Koch was thrilled by the Emmy nod. However, he had hoped that his co-stars, Ari Graynor and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, would also be nominated.
âI talked to Ari; Iâm devastated that she didnât get it,â Koch told The Hollywood Reporter. âThatâs the one sort of bummer from today. Same thing with Nicholas. I think both of them really deserved to be on there, so Iâm super bummed they didnât get nominated.â
The Menendez Brothers Face Upcoming Parole Hearing
Lyle & Erik Menendez have served 35 years behind bars for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. Prosecutors argued the motive was greed, while the defense claimed the brothers endured years of abuse by their parents â a stance critics dubbed the âabuse excuse.â
Earlier this year, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic reduced the brothersâ sentences from life without parole to 50 years to life. As per AP news, they cited their eligibility under Californiaâs youthful offender law. âI’m not saying they should be released â it’s not for me to decide,â Judge Jesic said. âI do believe they’ve done enough in the past 35 years, that they should get that chance.â
Their parole hearing, initially scheduled for June 13, has been postponed to August 21 & 22. As per ABC News, no reason was given for the delay.
