Hollywood Icon Rob Reinerâs influence stretched across generations of comedians, actors, and filmmakers who helped define American entertainment. Born to comedy legend Carl Reiner, he entered Hollywood early. Still, he went on to build a career firmly his own as a director, actor, and storyteller whose work blended humor, heart, and humanity.
In the wake of Rob and his beloved wife Michele Singer Reiner‘s tragic death, friends and longtime collaborators are reflecting on his life and legacy in the CBS News special âCBS News: Rob Reiner â Scenes from a Life,â which aired Sunday after â60 Minutesâ and is streaming on Paramount+ and YouTube.
Among those featured in the CBS News special was Michael Douglas, who shared a deeply personal reflection on Reinerâs resilience and drive.
‘Together Forever’: Douglas, Annette Bening & Albert Brooks Talk About Rob & Michele’s Dynamic
Friends and collaborators also reflected on how meeting Michele reshaped Rob Reinerâs life.
Douglas summed it up: âJust having met somebody who changed the end of your movie.â
Albert Brooks expanded on that transformation, saying, âThe desperation of finding someone was gone. You found your soulmate. It just made him happier. It made him calmer. He had a path now.â
Annette Bening echoed the sentiment, adding, âThey were very much companions to each other. And we all respected that about them and their relationship.â
Douglas also noted how the couple balanced each other. âShe was willing to play the bad cop. Because Rob was sometimes bouncing, bouncing off the walls. He had a great imagination, a great energy. Heâs very impulsive. And they complemented each other really well.â
Brooks added, “They knew they would be together forever. They were together at the very end in the same way they were together in the beginning.”
But alongside Reinerâs professional success came deeply personal challenges. Douglas, who shared a bond with Reiner beyond the screen, spoke candidly about that struggle.
âWith this terrible tragedy, weâre realizing how much pressure he was dealing with in his personal life with his son. I also had a son who had drug issues. Iâm happy to say heâs overcome them and is living a prosperous life. We talked a lot about that and what you can do as a parent, what you canât do.â
‘He Was A Family Man’: Douglas & Bening Talk About Shooting For ‘The American President’
Reflecting on their time together while filming âThe American President,â Douglas added, âMy own personal experience of working with him was spectacular. He was looking out for you.â
Bening also remembered Reiner as a leader who set a humane tone on set. âOn the set, he had that kind of enthusiasm that is infectious. The leader sets the tone, right? So he was wonderful that way. And a real avid family man.â
She recalled one moment in particular that stayed with her.
âWhen we were shooting American President, he would insist that the day ended at a sane time. He said, ” No, we want everyone to be able to have dinner with their kids. And I remember that very well, thinking, wow, thatâs unusual.â
Douglas on Growing Up in a Famous Shadow
Like Reiner, Douglas grew up as the son of a towering Hollywood figure, Kirk Douglas. That shared experience shaped how Douglas understood Reinerâs inner strength.
âWell, my experience was watching him, so I could never be the man that my father was. He could do everything, you know, I mean, he was spectacular. Once you go into the same business, it stares you in the face,â Douglas said.
âAnd, in Rob’s case, are you as funny as your father? But that I think is also what created his tenacity, his strength, and that’s something that’s not really talked about enough with Rob, about his endurance.â
Douglas said Reiner was âspectacularâ to work with on âThe American President,â adding that Reiner led with care and generosity.
