Diane Ladd’s cause of death has been confirmed two weeks after the Oscar-nominated actress died on November 3, at age 89. A death certificate obtained by the people on November 17 listed her cause of death as acute on chronic hypoxic respiratory failure.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, hypoxic respiratory failure occurs when the blood does not receive enough oxygen, often due to underlying lung disease.

Ladd’s certificate notes she had interstitial lung disease for several years, with esophageal dysmotility listed as another contributing condition. She was cremated on November 10.


Laura Dern Honors Her Mother in Emotional Tribute

Ladd’s daughter, Laura Dern, shared the news of her mother’s passing on November 3. Laura, 58, said Ladd died at home in Ojai, Calif., with her by her side.

Calling her “my amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother,” Laura wrote that Ladd “passed with me beside her this morning, at her home in Ojai, Calif.”

“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist, and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she added. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Laura is Ladd’s daughter with ex-husband Bruce Dern.


A Remarkable Career in Film and Television

Ladd began her screen career in the 1960s and went on to become one of Hollywood’s most respected performers. She earned an Oscar nomination for her breakout role in Martin Scorsese’s “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” and later won a Golden Globe for starring in the sitcom “Alice,” inspired by the 1974 film.

She worked alongside Laura in “Wild at Heart” in 1990 and “Rambling Rose” in 1991, earning two additional Oscar nominations. Ladd married three times, including her 1960–69 marriage to Bruce Dern.

Her husband 1999, Robert Charles Hunter, died in July at age 77. She is survived by Laura and her grandchildren, Ellery Walker and Jaya Harper.

Bruce Dern, 89, honored his former wife on the day she died, praising her impact on family, colleagues, and audiences.

In his statement, Dern reflected on Ladd’s grace, humor, and deep devotion to her family. “She lived a good life,” he said.

“She saw everything the way it was. She was a great teammate to her fellow actors. She was funny, clever, and gracious. But most importantly to me, she was a wonderful mother to our incredible wunderkind daughter. And for that I will be forever grateful to her.”

Ladd leaves behind a legacy that spans generations, with decades of work that helped shape American film and television.
