If you’re looking for a big old cry, Amazon Prime Video has the perfect show – but only for the next few weeks.

This Is Us was at turns syrupy sweet and laugh-out-loud funny, making it a perfect feel-good watch that went down a storm from the moment it first aired in 2016.

The show at first seems to star Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia as married couple Rebecca and Jack raising triplets in the 80s, but this is intercut with flash forwards to the adult triplets navigating their present day lives.

There is Kate (Chrissy Metz) who is dealing with weight struggles, Kevin (Justin Hartley) a buff actor starring in a terrible sitcom and Randall (Sterling K Brown) who is searching for his biological father.

It soon emerges that their father, Jack, is dead in the present day, raising the seasons-long mystery of how he died.

The US hit has been added to the Prime Video’s list of content leaving in the next 30 days, so you’ll have to be quick to this one. Particularly given that the drama was a cable show, so has bumper seasons with 20-plus episodes a piece.

As the show built up to the big reveal of what exactly happened to Jack, it plumbed new depths of heartbreak prompting @reallyreaux to pronounce on X: ‘I swear This Is Us is the most tear jerking TV show ever.’

When the show finally came to a conclusion in 2022, @AbbyLePage9 chimed: ‘Time to say goodbye to the most tear-jerking show ever. #ThisIsUs’

The show has even been included in online conversations around the saddest TV shows of all time. @h_eather31 posted on Reddit that they initially avoided the show because of fears it would simply be a ‘cry fest’ every week.

What other TV shows can you binge on Prime Video?

  • The Better Sister. Set in the upper echelons of wealthy New York society, the drama stars Jessica Biel as high-flying magazine editor Chloe whose husband is viciously murdered.
  • Boss. This stars Frasier legend Kelsey Gramme as the mayor of Chicago, Tom Kane, who has recently been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, which he is concealing from his team as he presses on with his political career.
  • Accused. Each episode of Accused follows a different character as they await their verdict in court and tells the story behind how they find themselves accused.

They then added: ‘It was. HOWEVER it was Dan [Fogelman]’s creativity and the writing that absolutely captivated me because I was just dying to know how it ended. The way he did all the flash forwards and time jumps really kept me interested.

‘I loved that show and it will forever be one of my favourite shows. The second last episode of The Train is one of the best episodes of television I’ve ever seen.’

We won’t share any spoilers on what exactly happens in that episode… You’ll have to watch and see.

This Is Us is available to stream on Prime Video – for now.
