Netflix has officially scrapped a huge show after just one season following rave reviews.

Last year, comic book fans were treated to a reboot of Scott Pilgrim vs The World with an animated twist in a series which boasted 96% on Rotten Tomatoes..

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels, saw Michael Cera return to the title role with Mary Elizabeth Winstead voicing Ramona Flowers.

To date the girl of his dreams, the slacker and aspiring musician has to defeat her even evil exes.

The synopsis for the Netflix show – hailed by many fans at the time as the ‘best’ anime on the platform – teased: ‘Then things get even more complicated.’

The reboot of the cult classic film featured the entire cast from the original live action movie, with the likes of Alison Pill, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza, Ellen Wong, Jason Schwartzman, Satya Bhabha and Kieran Culkin all back.

The show was a hit with critics and fans, but Bryan has made it clear there will be no more episodes.

‘It’s been one year since Scott Pilgrim Takes Off came out. It was an honour to work with all of the cast and staff around the world. It was like conducting a symphony orchestra every day,’ he reflected on X.

‘From the moment [co-creator] Ben David Grabinski sparked the idea, the project felt like a one of a kind miracle.

‘Anyway, we were recently informed that the show will NOT return.

‘As you know, we only intended one season, and called in a lot of favours to make it happen, so making more would have been nearly impossible.

‘Still, I know some of you have been holding out hope.’

While it will be devastating to fans, he previously insisted the programme was intended as a ‘self-contained’ story and the team didn’t ‘have any ideas lying on the floor’.

‘We pretty much put them all in,’ he admitted to Rolling Stone last year. ‘I never say never, but right now, it seems like it would take about 50 different miracles simultaneously for another season to happen.’

Even then, he insisted they had ‘no official ideas’ and the crew weren’t developing plans for a sequel series.

‘I don’t make any plans in general. Maybe some day one of us will text each other an idea that’s really great for a season two,’ he added.

‘But for now, my entire brain and heart is in this thing, and just getting it out into the world.’

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is available to stream on Netflix.
