Netflix drama slated as ‘so bad’ five years ago is shooting up the charts

A British psychological thriller that was slated by viewers when it was first released five years ago has now proved to be a favourite with Netflix subscribers.

The four-part series Cold Call stars Coronation Streets’ Sally Lindsay as June Clarke, a carer who is ‘barely getting by’.

After losing her job and discovering her daughter Hana (Taj Atwell) is pregnant, June makes the rash decision to sell her house.

However, things take a turn after she loses the money from the sale in a fraudulent cold call.

Not willing to let her family’s future hang in the balance, June then takes measures to hunt down those responsible with the assistance of old flame Des Grisby, played by Linda Green’s Daniel Ryan.

Despite the intriguing premise, at the time of its release the series was slammed by many.

‘It was so bad, it was almost unbelievable,’ Graham posted on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘The whole plot is just silly. Boring,’ Anne shared.

‘Too scripted, and woody in the direction. Interesting story, with some great promise, but any tension and suspense end up being a wet firework…’ Dave added.

However after the series was released on Netflix this week it’s quickly soared up the streaming charts, where it’s currently sitting as the second most-watched show.

‘Probably the best mini series I’ve watched in a while!’ Josh shared.

‘If you haven’t seen it yet, I would definitely recommend Cold Call with Sally Linsday. She plays a blinder and it had me gripped from episode one. She deserves so much recognition,’ Ast added.

Many others said while they missed it the first time around they were impressed, with some labelling it ‘gripping’ and ‘brilliant’.  

Speaking ahead of it’s release originally, Lindsay shared how close the storyline hit to home after she was nearly scammed herself.

‘I got a call from what I thought was the gas board. This guy was telling me because I hadn’t paid the bill, I was going to be given a county court judgment and be cut off,’ she said.

‘Even though I knew it was paid, I was listening and half of me was believing him.

‘Then the doorbell rang and there was someone at the door so I said, “I’ll ring you back…” and the line went dead..’

She also explained the ‘shocking’ reality of how everyday people are becoming the victims of fraud.

‘This very extraordinary thing is happening to these very normal people,’ she added.

Cold Call is streaming on Netflix.
