The nights are growing darker, pumpkins are in the supermarket, and there’s a chill in the air. That can only mean one thing.

It’s finally the Spooky Season, and what better way to spend the scariest time of the year than watching some truly terrifying TV series?

Of course, the big question is ‘what should you watch first?’

Should you revisit Stranger Things before season 5? Maybe go ghost hunting in Hill House? Or you could explore the eerie with the BBC’s Uncanny?

Well, how about a brand new Netflix series from the master of horror, James Wan?

Yet the 48-year-old has taken a break from telling fearsome fictional fables to instead explore ‘true’ stories of the unknown.

Titled True Haunting, this five-part documentary series explores real-life paranormal encounters as told by the people who experienced them.

Adding to the chills and thrills, though, are dramatised reenactments of the supposed spooky goings on, which have left viewers terrified.

@nrsliv06 shared on X that the show, ‘scared me pretty damn good but I LOVED IT!’

@medtori9_ was similarly enthusiastic writing, ‘I binged it today… one word? GOOSEBUMPS!! The first story freaked me out.’

@pritchard2324 added: ‘Watching this True Haunting on Netflix and it’s shot good so it has me hooked.’

However, @nnashelleeexo admitted that they’ve been waiting for True Haunting to land on Netflix, but ‘now they’re scared to watch it.’

The enthusiasm isn’t contained to X either. On Reddit, plenty of viewers were keen to share their thoughts.

AstronomerActual2893 wrote, ‘Just watched. Very scary,’ while Geek_reformed added: ‘The dramatisation element very much pushes the horror element (with some pretty good scenes) and it tells a good story. I’m a sceptic, but I love ghost stories, so I enjoy it.’

260HoosierFW said they think people who already believe in ghosts are more likely to enjoy it, but claimed it was ‘freaking my husband out, and he went into the other room until I shut it off.’

That’s quite enough of that. (Picture: Netflix)

Scariest TV shows to watch this Halloween

It’s the time of year when everyone’s entitled to a good scare, so our Deputy TV Editor, Tom Percival, has shared his small screen horror recommendations…

  • Ghostwatch: A TV special that hoodwinked the nation, Ghostwatch is notorious for the real-life panic it generated, but this ‘true’ terrifying tale of a haunted house is genuinely brilliant.
  • Chernobyl: Not a traditional horror by any means, but what Chernobyl lacks in monsters and maniacs, it more than makes up for in pure unadulterated dread.
  • Marianne: A genuinely unsettling story of the occult and witchcraft, Marianne is a horrifying exploration of the uncanny and eldritch.
  • Channel Zero: Forget Black Mirror, this is the scariest anthology series on TV.
  • Dead Set: Zombies in the Big Brother house? What’s not to love?

ColorMySoul88 had the highest praise, however, sharing, ‘I’ve watched a ton of ghost story shows in my life, and this is bar none top three, if not number one. I’m super impressed.’

Of course, not everyone was impressed with the series.

Skeptics have been keen to share their own views on the real-life cases, with many pointing out that mass hysteria and delusions may explain the cases.

Which is true… but also a lot less fun.

True Haunting is now streaming on Netflix.
