If you’re loving Squid Game season two on Netflix then one of the best thrillers on the streaming service, Alice in Borderland, should be next on your watchlist.

The Netflix adaptation of the popular Haro Aso manga first aired in 2020 and quickly cultivated a devoted fanbase.

The Japanese sci-fi series follows ‘an aimless gamer and his two friends [who] find themselves in a parallel Tokyo where they’re forced to compete in a series of sadistic games to survive’.

The show, which has been compared to Squid Game in the past, has proved itself a critical success, with rave reviews for the first two seasons and a highly-anticipated third one on the way.

And it is outpacing Squid Game on the popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, coming in at 91% compared to the Lee Jung-jae drama at 74%.

Even just sizing up the second season of each show, the critics’ score puts Alice in Borderland at a whopping 91% compared to Squid Game at 86%.

If anything, the figures speak for themselves. The second season of Alice In Borderland set a record for the most hours viewed in a week for a Japanese series, per Netflix and, for a time, enjoyed a spot on the Global non-English top 10 shows.

Fans have praised Alice in Borderland’s dark and suspenseful plot and thrilling sequences.

‘This is one of the best TV series I have ever watched! Season one reminded me a lot of Squid Game mixed with a little bit of Hunger Games but leaves off with a better cliffhanger,’ Google reviewer Sarah wrote.

‘Wow. Season 1 had already made me gasp, cry, happy, sad, shocked, and Season 2 was even more of a seat-turner,’ user Cecilia Xu shared.

Critics echoed this sentiment.

‘This sprawling Japanese manga adaptation is rarely subtle, but its ability to deliver on wide-scale expectations make it a true TV standout,’ IndieWire wrote in a season two review.

‘Alice in Borderland is bloody, violent, and sometimes stingy with narrative facts. But it revels in making or breaking the rules it’s created for its topsy-turvy world, and the core characters are compelling and fully rendered,’ Decider echoed.

There are currently no further details on when season three will drop but Netflix has confirmed that lead characters  Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) will return.

In the renewal announcement the streaming service wrote: ‘With Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya reprising their roles as Arisu and Usagi in season three, fans can look forward to witnessing the evolution of their characters in the ever-dangerous landscape of Borderland

‘[Director] Shinsuke Sato’s continued direction will also ensure that the series maintains its trademark intensity and cinematic excellence.’

Season one and two of Alice in Borderland are now streaming on Netflix.
