<p id=”par-1_19″>Netflix’s <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/surviving-wait-3-reality-shows-binge-while-we-wait-love-is-blind-season-4.html/”>newest reality series</a> will have couples going undercover as they compete in “the ultimate game of romantic deception.” </p>

<p id=”par-2_72″>On Wednesday, the streamer announced that it has greenlit <em>Playing With Matches </em>(WT). The unscripted show will challenge couples to conceal their own relationship while exposing everyone else’s. The goal? To outlast the competition. According to <a href=”https://deadline.com/2026/09/netflix-playing-with-matches-social-experiment-series-1237064415/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Deadline</a>, the cast will live together in a <em>Big Brother</em>-esque house, meaning that everyone’s relationship will constantly be on display, as both the players and viewers try to figure out who the secret couples really are. </p>
<p id=”par-3_69″><em>Playing With Matches </em>is Netflix’s latest entry into the “social deception” sub-genre of reality TV. The streamer is also home to <em><a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/the-circle-what-is-the-prize-for-the-winner-of-the-netflix-show.html/”>The Circle</a>, </em>where players – who communicate via a social media app – can choose to play either as themselves or as a fictional persona. Other shows that involve people engaging in scheming and misdirection to win a game include <em>The Mole, The Trust</em>, and <em>Million Dollar Secret.</em> </p>
<p id=”par-4_91″>Of course, the big name in social deception TV right now is <em>The Traitors</em>. Peacock’s addictive and entertaining competition show features players – who are either Traitors or Faithful – who work together to complete challenges, which increase the prize pot. Every night, the Traitors murder one of the Faithful. Meanwhile, in group Roundtable sessions, everyone votes on who should be banished from the game. The U.S. version of the show, which typically features celebrity players, has been a massive success for Peacock. In September, a civilian-focused version premieres on NBC. </p>

<p id=”par-5_62″>Most people don’t appreciate being lied to in real life. And they probably claim not to engage in the practice themselves. So why are reality shows built around lying and deception so popular? Well, for one thing, they’re fun to watch, especially when a show leans into its campy qualities, like <em>The Traitors</em>. But there may be more to it than that. </p>
<p id=”par-6_57″>“One theory is that watching reality TV allows us to engage in a hyperreality,” sociologist Danielle Lindemann, author of <em>True Story: What Reality TV Says About Us</em> told the <a href=”https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20240207-the-traitors-why-people-are-obsessed-with-this-new-deceit-filled-reality-tv-hit” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>BBC</a>. “It’s like our own lives but more extreme, a funhouse where everything is accentuated. We all know liars in our lives, but probably not to this extreme.”</p>
<p id=”par-7_27″>Playing along with <em>The Traitors</em> can also make people feel better about themselves, especially if a viewer’s birds-eye view gives them insight that a player doesn’t have. </p>
<p id=”par-8_70″>“We often watch reality TV to feel superior to the people on the shows,” said Lindemann. “We can see what’s happening and we know what’s to come, but the people on the show don’t. It can give us this sense of smug superiority, like ‘why didn’t you see what they did there?’ When in actuality it’s really not that obvious. They don’t have a lot of clues to go on.”</p>
