Rob Reinerâs longtime Brentwood home, a residence rich with Hollywood history and personal meaning, has become the focus of a heartbreaking investigation. On December 14, a house once marked by warmth and holiday cheer, with Christmas decorations framing the entrance, was suddenly surrounded by police activity, media crews, and paparazzi vans.
Inside, the beloved filmmaker and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead (as confirmed by multiple outlets, including TMZ & People). For decades, the home represented family, creativity, and stability for Reiner.
Here’s all we know about the home that is now the center of a chilling double homicide investigation.
A Historic Brentwood Home With Hollywood Roots
The home was originally built in 1936 by Oscar-winning Henry Fonda. It was later owned by actor Paul Henreid, best known for his role in âCasablanca,â before becoming the longtime residence of legendary producer Norman Lear.
Lear purchased the property in 1972 and lived there for nearly two decades. In 1991, Reiner and Michele bought the home from Lear, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Located in the Brentwood neighborhood on the west side of Los Angeles, the area offered a quieter, suburban setting. Reiner grew up in Beverly Hills before settling there with his family.
Why Rob Reiner Fell in Love With the House
The two-story, New Englandâstyle residence spans about 10,000 square feet and features six bedrooms, six bathrooms, and two staff quarters.
When the couple purchased the property, it also included a swimming pool, a pool pavilion, landscaped gardens, and a tennis court located on a lot across the street.
Reiner once spoke of the home as a longtime dream. During a February 2015 appearance on PBS, he reflected on playing tennis at the house years earlier while working alongside Lear on âAll in the Family.â
“I would go over there and I used to say, ‘Boy, if ever I get money, if ever I have some money to buy a house, this is the kind of house that I would like,’ ” he said, noting his admiration for the homeâs “New England charm.”
The Moment Reiner Realized It Was Norman Learâs Home
After Reiner and Michele married, they began searching for a home together. He recalled that Michele told him she had found one that “might be good.” When she shared the location, he quickly realized it was Learâs former residence.
He remembered Michele saying, “I mean, there was a lot of pictures of Norman Lear here. I thought, ‘Well, whoever owns this house must really like Norman Lear a lot.’”
Reiner said Michele wondered if it might feel strange living there. His response was immediate. “Honey, this is exactly the kind of house that I’ve always wanted.”
Home Becomes Site of Tragedy
On December 14, the Los Angeles Fire Department was called to a Brentwood home to provide medical aid. First responders found two people dead upon arrival, the department told People.
Later, multiple sources identified the victims as Reiner and Michele. Sources also told People that the couple was found by their daughter, Romy.
Authorities say their son, Nick Reiner, has been taken into custody in connection with the deaths. The investigation remains ongoing.
Once known as a gathering place filled with history, warmth, and family memories, the Brentwood home now stands at the center of a heartbreaking chapter in Hollywood history.
