A newly married man was seen telling his wife he had not felt instantly attracted to her on the latest episode of Stranded on Honeymoon Island.

The BBC One dating show returned for its second episode on Thursday, hosted by Davina McCall on a gorgeous Philippine island.

In the show, a group of hopeful singletons first meet at a speed-dating event, before they’re shipped off to the tropical isle and paired up for a series of non-legally-binding weddings on a jetty.

Among the latest batch of contestants who tied the knot were David and Ini, who bonded over their shared Christian faith at the speed-dating event.

However, as soon as their faux nuptials were over, David told Ini there was another woman on the speed dates he would have been equally happy to have seen walking down the aisle to him. Ouch.

Later on, after David and Ini had bedded down in their new rough-and-ready beachside home for three weeks, she decided to question him further on the comment.

He explained that he had her and ‘one other person’ in mind for his possible bride, singling out the Asian-Australian woman Tanya, who had been number 28 at the speed-dating event.

‘I had two different types of connections,’ David told Ini while sitting on the picturesque beachside. ‘The connection I had with you was instant, in terms of chemistry, and so our conversation was just straight chemistry, banter, found out you’re Nigerian Yoruba. It just flowed.’

He then added: ‘However, at the time, I didn’t have an instant attraction. Initially, for me, I was like, okay, cool.’

David went on to say that during his date with Tanya, he had felt the instant attraction that had been missing from his first meeting with Ini.

‘Number 28, it was an instant attraction for me, straight off the bat,’ David told a dumbfounded Ini.

What’s the premise of Stranded on Honeymoon Island?

The new BBC show sees Davina McCall play matchmaker to a group of singletons.

After their wedding ceremony, the couples are left to their own devices on the island, in the hopes that the stripped-back setting will help love bloom on what is technically their honeymoon.

What’s available is fairly limited: it’s the basics of a toothbrush and a bed, with a nearby composting loo. This is where the 12 singletons will spend three weeks together.

The show’s announcement came hot on the heels of the ITV decision to axe McCall’s other reality dating series My Mum, Your Dad.

‘Since I sat down there, I was like, oh, okay, cool. I’ve never dated outside of Black women. So for me, it was like, I would like to get to know her more.’

Ini then asked him to honestly tell her which of the two of them he would have preferred to have been paired up with. David said he would have preferred to ‘go outside his comfort zone’ with Tanya.

He then added: ‘But then I got conflicted, because I connected with you on what I actually believe in, which is faith from God. I would love to know more and explore it. “Okay, this would be a slow burner. This is good.” That’s genuinely how I felt at that time.’

Ini explained to the Channel 4 cameras that she was hurt, saying: ‘I thought we were on the same wavelength. If that’s your person, please don’t let me get in your way. Don’t let me be in your story where your story was supposed to be a different way.

‘If a situation like this happened in the real world, I’m gone. You do not have to send me a follow-up message. If that’s how you feel, that’s how you feel.’

Stranded on Honeymoon Island continues on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
