Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who stars in upcoming Netflix documentary “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys,” revealed while filming episode 5 that he previously underwent cancer treatments at a Houston hospital, per ESPN.
Now, the 82-year-old has courageously spoken out about the details of his alarming diagnosis, and the key thing that helped him in the fight for his life.
Jones told CBS News Texas on August 13 during an interview at Cowboys training camp, “You don’t like to think about your mortality, but I was so fortunate to have some great people that sent me in the right direction. I got to be a part of a trial that was propitious.” He explained, “It’s called PD-1, and it really, really, really worked.”
The mogul said the treatment did not come without side effects, revealing he had to have both hips replaced because the drug “ate my hips up.” He concluded, “It’s rough on your bones, but other than that, I’m so proud to be getting to sit here with you guys, and be getting to do what we do.”
Jerry Jones Had Melanoma
ESPN says Jones told The Dallas Morning News he was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma in 2010, and began a 10-year treatment journey. The Melanoma Research Alliance says a stage 4 diagnosis means the cancer has spread from the skin to other organs, and potentially also to other distant points in the skin. Because of this, it is difficult to cure, and only 22.5% of patients will survive 5 years.
Jones says he beat those odds thanks to treatment with PD-1, which he calls a miracle drug. “”I went into trials for that PD-1, and it has been one of the great medicines. I now have no tumors,” he said. The story explains he received the treatment at MD Anderson.
The former Arkansas Razorbacks offensive lineman also underwent a total of four surgeries on his lungs and lymph nodes. “America’s Team,” which Netflix says will let fans relive “the wild ride of the ’90s Dallas Cowboys dynasty,” hit the app August 19.
‘America’s Sweethearts’ Stars Performed at Premiere of New Jerry Jones Documentary
The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, who star in the smash hit Netflix docuseries “America’s Sweethearts,” gave a stunning performance on August 11 at the “America’s Team” premiere, which was held at The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
Some fans in the comments wondered if the famous cheerleading team did away with their “show group,” which formerly traveled for USO tours and other special appearances. “Is âShow Groupâ still a thing or does everyone have the opportunity to perform at different events?” questioned one fan.
The answer is that the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders did in fact stop nominating a “show group” at some point after their original reality show, “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team,” was cancelled in 2022. Fans have theorized the decision may have been due to a reduction in USO touring, and no more need for the dramatic element of picking the group that made for good reality TV.
However, the cheerleaders do still go on USO tours. On June 11, 2025, 4th year veteran Tori took to Instagram to celebrate being a part of the 86th USO Tour in Germany. She said she will “never forget getting to meet so many brave men and women.”
