Nicole Kidman has given fans a rare glimpse into not one but two of her most high-profile relationships.
The Oscar-winning actor was married to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001, and adopted two children together: Isabella and Connor.
Following their split, she then met musician Keith Urban in 2005 in Los Angeles, with the pair marrying a year later in Sydney, Australia.
Nicole and Keith welcomed two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, and for years were one of Hollywood’s power couples.
However, in September 2025, Nicole announced that she and Keith had separated.
It was revealed that she had filed for divorce — despite reportedly not wanting the split — citing irreconcilable differences.
Now, almost a year on, and after having clearly embraced the single life, Nicole has opened up about both marriages and how they differed from one another.
Speaking to British Vogue, the 59-year-old explained how her relationship with Tom Cruise impacted the very beginning of her career.
‘You have to remember literally, because of who I married at such a young age, I was thrust into it since I was 22,’ she began.
‘I got married so young. Suddenly I was 22, 23 years old and I had this huge movie star husband. But it just seemed completely natural. We just fell madly in love and it was that simple.’
Nicole continued, saying that people warned her that her marriage could affect her career. However, it didn’t faze her.
‘I’m like, “I don’t care. I’m in love. I want to be married.” And then I was his wife and they were like, “See, we told you.” I’m like, “So what? I wasn’t meant to marry the man I love? Of course I’ll throw my career away. I don’t care”.’
Sadly, we all know that fairytale didn’t last. Neither did the naivety of young love in the public eye.
When Nicole met Keith at 38, she had fully established herself as a force to be reckoned with and was one of the most famous actors in the world.
They would regularly accompany each other to red carpet events and put on a united, caring display.
However, when almost 20 years of marriage came to an end last year, Nicole told British Vogue that she was ‘very fearful and deeply vulnerable.’
It was all down to her ‘feelings first’ approach. ‘I’ve approached my whole life like that,’ she said, adding: ‘That’s just who I am. I don’t overthink things and I’m probably not that analytical.
‘I’m far more feeling-centred and I lead with my heart,’ she continued.
‘I just go, “OK, what do I feel here? I’ll give it a go.” It throws people, because I think they think I’ll be far more measured and I’m not.’
Speaking both personally and professionally, Nicole confirmed that she can ‘still approach things intellectually.’
However, she said her ‘desire is not to be ruled by [her] head.’
Seemingly referencing her past relationships, she added: ‘I’ve always wanted to live a well-examined life…Trying things, making mistakes, failing, getting back up, moving on, embracing love, staying open, keeping the heart open and the possibilities.’
Nicole then told the outlet that, while this has not been the easiest year for her, she’s learned to deal with life’s curveballs — something that comes with age.
‘But at the same time I’m like, “OK, I didn’t expect this.” I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now.
‘You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it’s all going to be like and then it’s… not. You have to adjust. You adapt.’
Nicole finished, stating that the future is ‘completely unknown’ to her right now, calling it ‘strange.’
Acknowledging that this is her new normal, she concluded: ‘I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can just go forward with an enormous amount of hope.’
