Just how imminent is the Switch 2 reveal? (Nintendo)
New sources claim that the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal is still likely to happen this month, as reports emerge about the filming of its annoucement trailer.
Nintendo logic doesn’t work like anybody else’s but, even so, a reveal of their next console, nicknamed Switch 2 by fans, doesn’t seem to make sense before Christmas. Not when they have such a strong line-up of autumn games and don’t want to put people off buying their current console.
And yet, over the last few weeks, there have been consistent, albeit unsubstantiated, rumours of a reveal this month. Nothing that makes an imminent unveiling in any way certain but the sheer number of supposed leaks and hints is far more than might be expected – especially since, if anyone was just going to invent a rumour, October or later would be much more likely.
One new rumour revolves around the suggestion from Paul Gale that a ‘trailer-like commerical’ was recently filmed for a ‘next generation console’, leading to him suggesting that we are no more than six weeks away from a Switch 2 reveal.
When the current Switch was unveiled, in October 2016, it was via a live action trailer that concentrated on showing what the console is and how its hybrid form works, with little in the way of game footage. It’s not legally available online anymore, because the music rights expired, but you may remember it for its rooftop party setting.
Fellow leaker Nate The Hate (aka NateDrake) has commented on the rumour but only by saying that he heard what is likely the same information a month ago, but has not been able to verify it.
At the same time, a Spanish podcast claims that Nintendo has told its partners to get ready for a major promotion ‘coming soon’, that is implied to be for the Switch 2.
According to Reddit, one of the three hosts claims to be 99% certain of a reveal in the ‘coming weeks’ and one of the others is 80% sure. They also mention that, as previously hinted at by Nintendo themselves, the new console is fully backwards compatible with the Switch.
The ability to play current Switch games on the new console would be one of the only reasons to announce it this early, given Nintendo has previously only committed to an announcement sometime before April.
And yet not only is there no proof for any of these supposed leaks but the far more believable explanation for the rumours is confusion over new Christmas hardware bundles for the existing Switch.
One for the Switch OLED model has already been leaked and there is further talk, from Dealabs, of up to five new bundles for this year, which is exactly what you’d expect for a console in its final years.
These are rumoured to be announced this week, with each of the new Nintendo Direct presentations this year having come with a caveat that Nintendo will not be discussing their new hardware. So, if they don’t say that about the next one, then the rumours may be true after all…
