It’s the horror movie everyone’s talking about – but even the director of Obsession has admitted it’s not perfect.

In fact, there’s a glaring plot hole… and it could spell bad news for those hoping for more.

Obsession (2025) has become an unprecedented box office smash following its cinematic release on May 16, grossing over $79million (£58.5m) worldwide.

The story follows hopeless romantic Bear (Teen Wolf’s Michael Johnston) and his crush on childhood friend Nikki (Superman & Lois star Inde Navarrette).

But this is far from a soppy, lovey-dovey tale, as Bear purchases a One Wish Willow, a supernatural toy that claims to grant, you guessed it, one wish when broken.

Using it to make Nikki fall in love with him, the consequences are horrifying, as Bear learns that winning his crush’s heart comes at a sinister price.

The concept is unique, which is likely one of the major selling points of the film and reasons for its popularity.

However, that could also cause its downfall should the conversation of spin-offs arise.

In a new interview, filmmaker Curry Barker admitted that the ‘one wish’ power doesn’t allow for longevity.

‘I mean, it’s kind of a plot hole,’ he told Total Film. ‘It’s something I don’t like to think about too much, because it totally doesn’t make sense that there’s a world of people just making wishes.’

‘It really doesn’t make any sense at all,’ he reiterated.

‘If the One Wish Willow actually works, which it does in this lore, and people are just making wishes left and right, there would be some crazy – like, dragons would exist. And none of that.

‘Obsession is the most disturbing horror film in years,’ writes Helen O’Hara

‘Credit to Navarrette for a horror performance that’s among the greats. From her unsettlingly false, too-broad smiles to her sudden bursts of movement, this is the essence of every ‘crazy’ ex-girlfriend boiled down into one concentrated poison.

‘And yet, Nikki is the victim here, and Barker never loses sight of that. In fact, aside from the obvious thrills of the horror beats, what’s most interesting about this film is its deep awareness of relationship mechanics and the pitfalls of love.’

‘The world is pretty normal from what we see in this movie. So, it doesn’t really make sense.’

Explaining how he interprets the universe to be, Curry added: ‘Here’s my take; every time someone makes a wish, they enter into an alternate reality where their wish comes true, so you’re not experiencing everybody’s wish at the same time.’

Still, Curry is open to the idea of a sequel and ‘sees Obsession 2’ being a possibility in the future.

‘Or even what really is exciting to me is maybe an anthology, like a one-hour episode. Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails,’ he teased.

Curry mused that he could direct the pilot episode, then other filmmakers could be invited for future episodes to ‘give their spin at it’.

‘That would be really cool.’

Obsession has been flooded with rave reviews over the past week, securing a near-perfect 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences.

Among the feedback, it’s described as a ‘masterpiece’ and ‘genius’, with praise in particular for 25-year-old Navarrette, whose past roles included sitcom Denton’s Death Date and Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why.

‘Navarrette’s performance is nothing short of mind-blowing, going to places that can only be described as inhuman. An incredibly well-crafted, deeply unsettling, insidious, and genuinely terrifying film,’ writes Dallas King of Flick Feast.

‘Curry Barker’s feature filmmaking debut is a vicious, cutthroat horror tale that feels familiar but keeps things fresh with its humanity, its shocks, and a star-making performance by Navarrette’, adds Jeffrey M. Anderson of Common Sense Media.

Elijah Fischer of MovieJawn declares Obsession ‘intensely compelling’, while Leandro Ariel Porcelli of Cinéfilo Serial says it gave him ‘elevated goosebumps’.

Indeed, at just 26, Obsession is Curry’s major directing success following his 2024 debut with the found footage horror film Milk & Serial, which became a viral video sensation.

Obsession is already clocking up award nominations and drawing comparisons to other recent horror hits, such as Weapons, all while becoming the cheapest movie to top the box office in 17 years, beating the Michael Jackson biopic and The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Obsession is now showing in cinemas.
