Odell Beckham Jr. Says He Didn’t Make Enough Money in the NFL, Other Players Call Him Out

During his NFL career, Odell Beckham Jr. had some highs and some serious lows. While he often excelled on the field, the wide receiver apparently struggled with locker room culture and was at the center of tense moments with teammates. Beckham Jr. is willing to try again with a new NFL team if someone is willing to have him. Apparently, that’s more of a need than a want from the highly-touted wideout, though. Odell Beckham Jr. recently suggested he is struggling to live off the $100 million he made during his time in the league. He’s being trolled mercilessly for the statement, and some of his NFL coworkers are weighing in.

In October, Odell Beckham Jr. appeared on The Pivot Podcast. While his appearance didn’t initially gain much traction, a comment he made about money during that appearance is now going viral. The former NFL wideout discussed how much money he’s made over the years, but not in a positive way. Beckham Jr. earned $100 million across multiple NFL contracts. He is now insisting it’s not nearly enough money to create “generational wealth.”

In fact, Beckham even suggested that $100 million, after taxes are paid and managers get their cut, is not enough to last a lifetime. He argued that if you spend $4 million per year, your earnings will be drained before you retire. The comment is being criticized for being wildly out of touch. Fans, other players, and podcasters are questioning exactly why Beckham Jr. thinks it’s reasonable to spend $4 million per year in the first place. They are also questioning what would have prompted him to go public with such a wild take.

Odell Beckham Jr. is doubling down on his comments about not having enough money. After the backlash began, he took to X (formerly Twitter) to try to explain his stance. He insists he was just trying to point out that, in the end, $100 million isn’t actually $100 million to the athlete. Still, his explanation is doing little to make him seem in touch with the reality of his very privileged situation. Several former and current NFL stars have weighed in on the comments. They want to let the world know that they absolutely don’t agree with Beckham Jr.

Shannon Sharpe, a prominent former NFL star and current media personality, has been pretty vocal about Beckham Jr.’s statement. He said that Beckham Jr. should have no issue making $100 million last a lifetime. Sharpe also questioned whether football stars need multiple homes and dozens of cars. Sharpe suggested wanton spending is to blame instead of a lackluster paycheck. Several other former and current stars have suggested “user error” is the core problem, not the size of Beckham Jr.’s paycheck.
