An espionage thriller that has been described as ‘absolutely gripping’ is now available to stream on ITVX.

The Old Man, which boasts a star-studded cast including Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow and Alia Shawkat, first came out in 2022.

The show sees Dan Chase (Bridges), a former CIA operative and Vietnam veteran, confront his complicated history with the CIA and complex relationship with former mentor and FBI Assistant Director, Harold Harper (Lithgow).

Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Thomas Perry, the series was renewed for a second season following its premiere.

However, after airing in 2024, the show was cancelled by FX towards the end of last year after just two seasons.

Despite some harsh reviews from critics, however, fans of the show have praised its storyline.

Taking to Reddit, Petyr Dane said: ‘The Old Man Season 2 is absolutely gripping.

‘Finally decided to give the second season a shot and now I’ve been up for eight hours binging the whole season. Probably the best dad show to come out this year and another home run from FX.’

@xnodesirex also said: ‘First few episodes are truly incredible. The later half lacked the intrigue and danger that first hooked me. It focused on a lot of unanswered questions.’

Writing on Google reviews, Mark Randolph added : ‘One of the best TV series I’ve watched in recent years.

‘Casting Jeff Bridges in the title role was spot on; the supporting cast, including.

‘John Lithgow, is also brilliant. I don’t know if the storyline extends to a second season without a degradation in quality, so I would be satisfied with what they produced in Season 1. Highly recommended.’

This came despite a critic for the Guardian describing it as being ‘so silly it’s basically unwatchable’.

Alongside Lithgow and Bridges, the series also stars Navid Negahban, Jacqueline Antaramian, Amy Brenneman and Gbenga Akinnagbe.

Season 2 saw Chase and ex-FBI Assistant Director Harold Harper focused on the kidnapping of Emily Chase by Afghan tribal leader Faraz Hamzad.

An official synopsis of the series reads: ‘Former CIA operative, Dan Chase, who has been living off the grid for decades, is forced to confront his past when an assassin comes after him.

‘To ensure his future, he must reconcile with his history, which involves a complicated relationship with a former CIA colleague, Harold Harper, and an unforeseen entanglement with a man known as Hamzad.’

The series received three Critics Choice TV nominations: Best Drama Series, Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Bridges and Best Supporting Actor for Lithgow.

The Old Man is available to watch on ITVX.
