A survey of 2,000 gamers in the UK and US suggests that people are split on whether GTA 6 will be worth a higher than normal price tag.
The idea that GTA 6 will cost more than the current standard of £70/$70, for a triple-A game, has been floating around for years now. Rockstar Games owner Take-Two is aware of the rumours, which have been encouraged by investors and analysts, but the last statement on the matter was that the price would be ‘reasonable.’
What the multi-millionaire boss of a video game publisher thinks is reasonable is open to interpretation, but the most frequent rumour has been of a £100/$100 price tag. Many fans have already prepared themselves for that price, but a survey suggests that the majority do not think it’s reasonable.
According to a study commissioned by FirstLook, which is a research platform used by publishers such as EA and Krafton, 59% of gamers think that £100 for GTA 6 is too expensive, while 40% think it’s fair. Incredibly, 1% (so around 20 people) think that price is too cheap.
The study found that 94% of the people they surveyed intended to buy GTA 6 and that 29% of them anticipated spending less on other companies’ games during the launch window this November – which is exactly why other publishers have been so keen not to release their games at the same time.
The 2,000 people in the survey were said to be regular gamers, who play multiple times a month. More casual gamers may well have a different view on whether £100 is a reasonable price, although if they don’t buy games often they may actually see it as an acceptable one-off purchase.

In terms of guessing what the game’s price will be, the average expectation came out at £76/$78. In more recent weeks, some have suggested that Take-Two may compromise and sell the game for £80/$80, which is a price tag reached already by Mario Kart World – although that game is cheaper digitally and essentially half price if bought with the console.
With no official information to go on, all anyone can do is wait and see what the final price will be, but one possibility is that the game will just be £70 as normal and instead there’ll be one or more collector’s editions that are considerably more expensive.
Although far from insubstantial, the financial success of GTA 5 has come primarily from the success of GTA Online and its many microtransactions. From that perspective you could argue that GTA 6 should be cheaper than normal, to get more people into the ecosystem, but that’s probably unlikely.
As well as pricing information, fans are also keenly awaiting Trailer 3 for the game, since Rockstar has still shown little in the way of actual gameplay. Many fans hope the trailer will debut sometime close to the May 21 earnings call for Take-Two, but there’s no guarantee of that.
A premiere in the next few weeks does seem likely though as, assuming the game hasn’t been delayed again, Take-Two will want to start pre-orders as soon as possible, which will also be the point at which we finally find out the game’s price.
