The Arconia is once again the center of chaos. Season 5 of âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ kicks off with the shocking death of longtime doorman Lester, setting Charles, Oliver, and Mabel on another mystery to solve. According to co-creator and showrunner John Hoffman, Lesterâs storyline âopened up a world of New York that felt very right for the season because it was classical New York.â
Charles, Oliver, and Mabel Are ‘Doing For Lester’ This Season
Though Lesterâs death is officially ruled an accident, the trio Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) refuse to accept the explanation. âThat seems absurd to the people whoâve been studying murders in the most murderous building,â Hoffman told TV Insider. âThey are driven by, [as] over and over again youâll hear, âWeâre doing this for Lester.â Theyâre walking into very dangerous situations.â
Episode 2, titled âAfter You,â will dive into Lesterâs backstory, exploring how a young dreamer became a steadfast doorman who dedicated his life to protecting the Arconiaâs residents.
Hoffman teased that viewers will finally understand âhow he connected to everybody in that building for as long as theyâve been there.â
The season will also introduce Lesterâs widow, played by Oscar-winning actress Dianne Wiest. Hoffman admitted it was a career highlight to bring her into the series. âI canât tell you what it meant to me to have Dianne Wiest say she would like to be in our show. I have been a very deep fan of Dianne Wiest for my entire life, and I just think sheâs brilliant,â he gushed.
‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5 Episodes 1-3 Synopsis Revealed
The first three episodes of season 5 promise both laughs and suspense, according to CarterMatt.com.
Season 5 episode 1, âNail in the Coffinâ â “While investigating Lesterâs mysterious âaccidentalâ death, the clues lure Charles, Oliver, and Mabel out of Manhattan â and straight into some dangerous new âoldâ territory.”
Season 5 episode 2, âAfter Youâ â “A look back at Lesterâs early days at the Arconia reveals how a young dreamer became a steadfast doorman â sacrificing his future to protect the residents from the buildingâs secrets.”
Season 5 episode 3, âRigorâ â “The trio stumbles upon a crucial piece of evidence⦠and promptly compromises it. With time running out, they scramble to solve the mystery before the police close in on them.”
The first three episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” premiere Tuesday, September 9, on Hulu.
