âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ may have just kicked off its fifth season on Hulu, but co-creator and showrunner John Hoffman says the Arconia might not be closing its doors anytime soon.
John Hoffman Hints at More Murders Beyond Season 5
While the series isnât guaranteed to return each year, Hoffman told TV Insider that thereâs still plenty of story left to tell.
âI wonât say whether or not there will be a murder at the end of this season, but if there were, I think thereâs an opportunity for more surprise that we will look to shake things up in a potential next go,â Hoffman teased. âNothing is at its end.â
The hit comedy has become known for ending each season with a shocking murder that sets up the next mystery.
But fans started to speculate that season 5 might be the end of the line after Selena Gomez shared a heartfelt Instagram post when filming wrapped earlier this year. Some even wondered whether Gomezâs character, Mabel, might be the Arconiaâs next victim.
Hoffman admitted that finding fresh ways to keep the show going can be a challenge but said the creative team always finds new inspiration.
âThereâs always been, from the moment we started making the show, of course, thereâs the stretch of credulity â how long can this thing go on? But itâs been very sweet because I have recognized just when you think, âWell, I donât know how to make it fresh anymore,â some new thought or some new idea in the room comes up ⦠and it feels like great opportunities to tell stories that feel relevant still. As long as thatâs happening, the murder should happen in my mind and wherever they take us.â
For now, fans will have to wait and see how season 5 plays out â starting with the shocking murder of Lester, the Arconiaâs beloved doorman.
Lesterâs Murder Shakes Up ‘Only Murders in the Building’
The season 4 finale in October 2024 set the stage for new chaos when Oliver (Martin Short) married Loretta (Meryl Streep), while Mabel and Charles (Steve Martin) were approached by Téa Leoniâs character for help finding her missing husband. After they declined, tragedy struck again: Lester (Teddy Coluca) was revealed as the next victim at the Arconia.
âItâs always one of those strange experiences with the finales of our seasons because we always have to start there first in many ways before we even begin episode one,â Hoffman told Decider in October 2024. âWe walk through all of the details and lay down everything that actually, in truth, happened. And then we back our way ⦠twisting our way to the front of the season with that mystery story.â
Hoffman also promised fans will see a deeper dive into Lesterâs life in 2025.
âOur beloved doorman has a hold of a large amount of tenantsâ secrets and many other things about his life were interesting for me to explore. The very nature of a doorman in a pre-war apartment building, a New York City in 2025, felt very, very interesting to look at,â he explained.
He added that season 5 explores new questions about power and tradition in New York. âWhat happens with the power in New York in regards to the classic respect and sort of protocols that have always been there that exist in these buildings ⦠and how does modern technology come into all of that?â
With only four episodes released so far, fans of âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ still have plenty of mystery ahead. New episodes drop Tuesdays on Hulu.
