Oscar-winning director of Putin documentary loses award on flight

Director Pavel Talankin’s Best Documentary win for ‘Mr. Nobody Against Putin’ has been overshadowed by a shocking disappearance after his statuette after it vanished on a flight to Germany.

The award, an embodiment of Talankin’s undercover work in Russia, was last seen in the hands of staff at New York’s JFK Airport.

It’s a devastating blow for a filmmaking team that risked everything to document the reality of state indoctrination.

Events leading up to the disappearance began at JFK’s Terminal 1 when the 8.5lb (3.8kg) statuette was raised by TSA agents as an item of concern during a routine security screening.

Despite the director having flown with the award a dozen times since March without incident, officials remarkably declared the figure a “potential weapon.”

Talankin was informed that the physical density of the award made it a security risk – meaning he was barred from taking it into the cabin, and leading to tensions as he and Lufthansa staff attemped to find a compromise.

A Lufthansa agent reportedly offered to hold the statuette personally or store it safely in the cockpit, but TSA officials refused.

A potential proposal to have a supervisor maintain possession of the award for the duration of the flight was overruled.

The director was ultimately given an ultimatum: the Oscar had to be checked under the plane or it would not fly at all.

Under the director’s watchful eye, the statuette was bubble-wrapped, taped shut, and tagged for transport in the aircraft’s cargo hold.

Talankin boarded his flight to Frankfurt with only a ticket number and a video of the box being taken away as proof of his possession.

Upon arrival in Germany, however, the box failed to appear on the baggage carousel at Frankfurt Airport.

Talankin’s executive producer, Robin Hessman, confirmed that although the flight landed as scheduled, the specific package containing the award had effectively vanished.

Talankin’s documentary captured two years of high-risk undercover footage, a project that forced him to flee his home country for his own safety in 2024.

The Oscar served as a validating symbol of all the struggle he faced in pursuit of the truth.

Lufthansa has since issued a formal statement claiming they are treating the matter with “utmost care and urgency” through a comprehensive internal search.

Meanwhile, co-director David Borenstein has opnely questioned whether a more famous, English-speaking actor would have recieved the same treatment by the TSA.

The global filmmaking community is now exerting significant pressure on both the carrier and US security officials for a swift resolution.

While the Academy can issue replacements in rare instances, the hunt for the original statuette remains ongoing.
