Patricia Arquette tribute to Diane Keaton

Iconic actor Patricia Arquette is paying a heartfelt tribute to another icon— Diane Keaton, her friend, mentor, and inspiration. At the “Murdaugh: Death in the Family” premiere in New York City on October 13, Arquette opened up to People about what it was like to work with the late Oscar winner, who died on October 11 at age 79.

“She was just so immediate, and so alive and so generous,” Arquette shared, recalling their time together on the 1991 TV movie “Wildflower” and the CBS Schoolbreak Special “The Girl with the Crazy Brother.”

Keaton’s Eye for Art & Her Unique Vision

Arquette remembered Keaton as not only a brilliant performer but also a gifted creative mind behind the camera. “She had such an incredible vision for beauty and design and photography and art,” Arquette shared. “She was just so effervescent and so alive.”

The Oscar winner admired Keaton’s authenticity and individuality, describing her as “very much her own person.” Arquette added, “We have very few original artists, like, real original people.”

Arquette’s new series, “Murdaugh: Death in the Family”, premieres on October 15 on Hulu. The series stars Jason Clarke as Alex Murdaugh, with Arquette playing his wife and Johnny Berchtold as their son.

As she prepares for her next chapter, Arquette says Keaton’s influence remains close to her heart. “She was one of those artists who made you want to be braver,” Arquette said. “She just had that kind of light.”

Looking back on Keaton’s extraordinary career, Arquette praised her versatility and depth. “What an actress,” she said. “If you watch ‘Reds’ or ‘Looking for Mr. Goodbar,’ you know? All the comedies, but also of course ‘Annie Hall’ and ‘The Godfather,’ I mean her acting is incredible.”

Arquette admitted she was such a fan that she once skipped school to see one of Keaton’s most acclaimed films. “I used to ditch school so I could see ‘Reds,’” she said with a smile.

Keaton’s work in “Annie Hall” earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, and she famously portrayed Kay, Al Pacino’s onscreen wife, in all three “Godfather” films.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed it responded to Keaton’s home at 8:08 a.m. on Oct. 11 and transported a 79-year-old woman to a nearby hospital. Her family later confirmed her passing to People and requested privacy during this time of grief.

Throughout her life, Keaton’s love for performance began early. After studying drama in college, she made her Broadway debut in Woody Allen’s “Play It Again, Sam” in 1969, earning a Tony nomination.

In one of her final interviews with People, Keaton reflected on her life and work. “I knew what I wanted in life, and I went after it,” she said. “Being a person who always knew simplifies things — it’s hard to find your way if you don’t.”

Keaton is survived by her two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke, whom she adopted in 1996 and 2001.
