Pedro Pascal Given Top Odds to Play the Pope

Now that there is a new Pope, some oddsmakers are taking a look at who might play the next Pope on the Big Screen.

The actor with the best odds in one such analysis? Pedro Pascal.

The story of the first American Pope, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, Illinois, and rising to the top echelon of the Catholic Church, would seem ready-made for the silver screen. Rather than a biopic, though, many movies showcase fictional popes, which is another possibility.

The Action Network broke down the odds. “After HBO’s The New Pope, the Oscar-nominated Two Popes, and (of course) Conclave, audiences are buzzing about who could next don the white cassock in a prestige drama or stylized satire,” the site noted in a blog post.

“With bettors looking at the next Pope odds markets, the Action Network has compiled a list of actors who could be in line for some on-screen papal portrayal,” the site wrote.

“Here’s a breakdown of the betting odds for who’s most likely to play the next on-screen Pope — whether in a serious biopic, surreal miniseries, or dark Vatican thriller.”

After Pascal (odds +200 with a 33.3% implied probability), the next actor in line is Oscar Isaac, the site reported. Mark Rylance is third, followed by Tom Hiddleston. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender are next on the list.

According to the site, Pascal has several things going for him that set him apart from the pack.

“Pascal can bring equal parts spiritual depth and meme-worthy charisma, making him a perfect fit for a modern, media-savvy Pope in the style of Jude Law’s Pius XIII. If a studio wants viewers to thirst-follow the Vatican, he’s the guy,” the site wrote.

As for the second choice, Isaac, Action Network wrote, “Isaac has been a fan-cast for just about every intelligent, morally complex male lead in the past five years. He brings gravitas without stiffness, and at +400 he’s a strong second choice to headline a stylish, conflicted papal character.”

Rylance was also touted for a papal role, with Action Network writing, “If you want the slow-burn, cerebral Pope who stares out windows and contemplates mortality, Rylance is your man. A prestige pick for a theological slow drama — think The Crown, but with more incense.”
